State various ways to study biology.

We can learn Biology by using scientific method.
Scientific method involves scientific investigation which comprises of ten stages.
These stages are:

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1.2
APPLYING SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
a)
Identify variables in a given situation
b)
Identify the relationship between two variables to form a hypothesis
c)
Design and carry out a simple experiment to test the hypothesis
d)
Record and present data in a suitable form
e)
Interpret data to draw conclusions
f)
Write a report on an experiment
g)
Practice scientific attitudes and noble values.

TASK:
1.
Carry out an experiment to compare the effects of table sugar, honey and
artificial sweetener on the fermentation rate of yeast. Table sugar contains
sucrose; honey contains fructose and glucose while the artificial sweetener
contains aspartame, a sweetening agent.
Prepare four measuring cylinders, labelled A, B, C and D.
A contains table sugar, yeast and warm water.
B contains honey, yeast and warm water.
C contains the artificial sweetener, yeast and warm water.
D contains only yeast and warm water.
Use the same amount of materials in each measuring cylinder.
Stir the ingredients in each measuring cylinder and start the stopwatch.
Record the maximum height of mixture attained in each measuring cylinder
after 30 minutes.
a)

Identify the manipulated variable, responding variable and fixed

variables in this experiment.

c)

Record the maximum height of mixture in each cylinder after 30 minutes

in a suitable form.

d)

Draw a bar graph of the height of the mixture (ml) against the types of
sweeteners.

e)

From the graph above, make an inference on which sweeteners best

assist the fermentation rate of yeast. From the inference, state whether
the chosen hypothesis is accepted or rejected.
