Reading Passage

Toms parents want him to sleep at nine oclock every night. He has to wake up at
six each morning to get ready for school.
Every evening, Toms mother makes sure that he finishes his homework and
dinner by eight oclock.

Then he is allowed to do anything he wants until bedtime.

Usually Tom chooses to read a book as he is an avid reader.

Tom, it is bedtime. Brush your teeth and go to bed, his mother would remind him
each night.
Please, can I read some more? This is the best part of the story, Tom pleaded.
After a few nights of arguing, Toms mother said very sternly, If I have to argue
with you every night, I think I will stop buying you books.
Tom saw his father nodding his head and he knew that his parents were serious.
He did not want them to stop buying him books. So he put his book back on the shelf,
brushed his teeth and went to bed.

Reading Passage

Jennys birthday was around the corner. Her parents had agreed to let her have a
birthday party at home. Jenny wanted to decorate the living room with lots of balloons
and streamers. She wanted to invite all her classmates to her party.
Jenny, you cannot invite all your classmates. Our house is not big enough to
accommodate so many people. You should invite only your close friends, her mother
told her.
So Jenny started to make a list of the friends whom she wanted to invite. However,
she could not decide who to invite as she was afraid that if she invited one and not the
other, they would not be happy.
Mum, I dont know who to invite. I want to invite them all! cried Jenny.
In the end, Jenny decided not to invite her friends over to her house. Her mother
baked a cake and Jenny celebrated her birthday with all her friends during recess in the
school canteen.
And everyone, including Jenny, was happy.

Reading Passage

I want all of you to be on your best behaviour when we are at the Road Safety
Park, Mrs Ali told her pupils just before they boarded the bus.
On the way to the park, the pupils were all very excited. Some of them wanted to
be pedestrians while others wanted to be cyclists and motorists driving around in the gokarts.
How I wish I had learnt to cycle, so I can cycle with you, Pei Ling grumbled to
her best friend, Kate.
Well, it is never too late to learn. You can ask your mother to teach you and then
we can go cycling together in future, suggested Kate.
When they got to the park, the pupils had a short briefing on traffic rules at the
auditorium. At the end of the learning journey, they felt that they had learnt a lot and
could not wait to tell their parents about their great day at the Road Safety Park.

Reading Passage

Jack loved to play computer games. As soon as he returned from school, he

would switch on the computer and spend hours playing game after game.
Jack, I have told you many times to get changed and have a rest before
you start doing your homework, his mother would reprimand him. However, Jack
always turned a deaf ear.
One day, when Jack got home, he had the shock of his life. The computer
was gone. In its place was a shelf filled with books. There was a note pinned to the
wall. After reading the note, Jack changed out of his uniform and took a nap. He
knew that it was no use arguing.
That evening, Jacks mother spoke to him, I know you are a sensible boy
who understands what I am doing.
Since that day, Jack started to read more and his grades began to improve.
His teachers praised him and asked him to share the secret of his success. Jack
attributed his success to his mother.

Reading Passage

Mrs. Lee and her two daughters volunteer at the home for the elderly
every Sunday. Early in the morning, they visit the market to buy the ingredients
they need to cook a hearty lunch for the residents.

On the first Sunday of the month, they cook chicken rice. Then, it is
fishball noodles on the second Sunday. On the third weekend, they usually cook
a spicy dish. On the last weekend, it will be Western food. If there are five
Sundays in that particular month, the residents get to indicate their preference for
the last Sunday.

The elderly residents truly appreciate the effort put in by Mrs. Lee and her
daughters.

Thank you for cooking such sumptuous meals for us. We are very
fortunate indeed, one of the residents expressed in gratitude to Mrs. Lee.

Mrs. Lee wants her daughters to grow up to be caring and considerate

people who make time for the less privileged in the community.
