UNIT 1: WE ARE LIVING THINGS

1) LIVING THINGS AND NON-LIVING THINGS: DIFFERENCES

Our planet is a wonderful place. Besides having rocks, water, ice and clouds, it has living
things. There are many kinds of living things on Earth, such as animals, plants and people.

LIVING THINGS: All living things have something in

common: they are born, they grow, they reproduce and they
die. People and animals need water and air to live. They also
get food from plants to live.

NON-LIVING THINGS: Non-living things are not

alive, they are not born, they do not grow, they do not
reproduce and they do not die. Some non-living things,
like water and air, are necessary for living things to live.
There are two types of non-living things: natural, which
have not been made by humans, and artificial, which have
been made by humans.

Activity 1: Complete the table about differences between living and non-living
things.
LIVING

NON-LIVING

Are born.

Are _ _ _ born.

They _ _ _ _.

They do not grow.

They reproduce.

They do not _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _.

They _ _ _.

They do not die.

Activity 2: There are two types of non-living things. Write a list with six of each.

2) FUNCTIONS OF LIVING THINGS

All living things have vital functions which make them different from non-living
things.
The three vital functions are: the nutrition process, the interaction process, and
the reproduction process.

1. Nutrition process: All living things need to eat. We get

food from other living things, but we also need non-living
things to survive, such as water and salt. We need to eat
so that we can have energy and grow.

2. Interaction process: All animals interact with other

animals. We use our senses to interact with other things.
The five senses are: sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch.
Thanks to the interaction process, we notice what is
happening around us and we can react.

3. Reproduction process: In the reproduction process, living

things reproduce to make new living things with the same
characteristics. Animals have young, and plants produce
seeds from which other plants grow.

3) HUMANS: CHARACTERISTICS.
What makes us human beings? We need to eat, reproduce, and interact with
others, just like animals. But we have characteristics that make us different from other
animals:

We walk upright and can use our hands to do things

or make things; because we have our hands free, we
can use them to hold or manipulate objects.

We communicate using different languages. This is

a special characteristic of humans. We can use
spoken language, written language, songs, etc. to
communicate.

We have a very developed brain: we can think, learn,

memorize, imagine...

Thanks to these characteristics, humans are different to other

animals.
Activity 1: In your notebook, write three characteristics that make humans different
from other human beings.

4) THE SENSES.
As you already know, the five senses are: sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch.
Thanks to the senses, humans can interact with their environment: listening to other
people or to music, tasting or smelling food, touching an apple...
Our

senses

use different parts of our body:

To listen we use our ears.

To taste we use our tongue.

To see we use our eyes.

To smell we use our nose.

To touch we use our hands and skin.

5) THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

But the senses do not work alone. To interact we need to be conscious of what we are
doing and this is only possible thanks to our brain.
But how does the information travel from our senses to the brain?

It is possible thanks to our

nervous system,

which

tranfers the information from

the senses to the brain and
then from the brain to the
different parts of the body ,
using the nerves.

6) THE BRAIN.
The brain is responsible for translating the information received by the nerves
into images, colours, taste, smell, size, shape, and to react to the stimulus received.

Activity 1: Which sense....?
Which senses do you use to interact with these things?

a flower

sugar

ice

a dog
Activity 2: Taste and Smell
Items needed:

Bag of hard candy with different flavors (strawberry, apple, orange, grape, etc.)
Directions:

The teacher will give you a piece of candy.

Hold your nose.

Put the candy in your mouth.

What do you taste?

Keep the candy in your mouth and let it dissolve. Now what do you taste?
