LIFE SCIENCES

“ The study of living organisms and

life processes. Its aim is to learn
everything about life on this planet.
To Study life sciences in detail the
whole world is divided into two
categories.

NON LIVING
LIVING THINGS THINGS
Everything that has life Everything that does not
feel, breathe, grow, have life feel, breathe,
reproduce and move. grow, reproduce and
move.
ACTIVITY TIME
Make a list of 10 living things and 10 non living things around yourself.
LIVING THINGS NEED

Air Water Food

All living things need air. Every living thing is made up Every living thing need food
When we breathe in we take of water. Human body is made to stay alive. Food gives
in oxygen from the air. up of three quarters of them energy to grow and to
Oxygen helps in making energy water. Water helps the body stay healthy. Energy helps
in the bodies of all living to remain hydrated and also the living things to
organisms. Energy help living act as a carrier of food. function.
things to move and work
SOURCE
Our surrounding and
atmosphere..

Animals on land – Animals that live on land need air to breathe.

They breathe by taking oxygen from air into
their lungs.

Animals in water - Animals that live in water also need air to

Air
breathe. They breathe through the oxygen
that is dissolved in the water with the help of
their gills.

Plants – Plants also breathe. They take in air through tiny holes in
their leaves. These tiny holes are called stomata.
SOURCE
Natural resources of water is
river, streams, lakes,
reservoirs and ground water.

For Human - Humans use water in their daily chores like cleaning,
washing, and cooking. If we talk about human body
that all the processes carrying out in our body could
not be possible without water. Water helps in keeping
our body hydrated.

For Animals- Water help animals to digest their food. Water

regulates the body temperature of animals. Animal

Water
also use water to clean their body.

For Plants – Plant use water to transport nutrients in the body

and to regulate their body temperature. Plant take
water through their roots and green leaves use it to
make foods.
SOURCE
Plants and animals

Herbivores – Green plants can make their own food in the

sunlight. Animals cannot make their own food.
Some animals eat plants and they are known as
herbivores. For e.g. cows, mice, sheep etc.

Carnivores - Animals that eat the meat of other animals are

called Carnivores. For e.g. lions, tigers, dogs etc.

Food
They have special teeth to hunt their prey and are
usually very fast.

Omnivores – Human beings and some other animals eat both

plants and animals. They are called Omnivores. For
e.g. hens, crow, humans etc.
ACTIVITY TIME
What role air, water and food play in your life?
