#1 What are the Life Processes
in Humans and Animals?
#2 What are the Life Processes
in Plants?
#3 How can we tell Living
Things from Nonliving Things?
EARTH, SUN,
AND MOON
The sun is the closest star to Earth. It radiates light and heat,
or solar energy, which makes it possible for life to exist on
Earth.

Earth is the third planet from the Sun in our solar system. That
means Venus and Mars are Earth’s neighboring planets.

Earth has just one Moon. It is the only planet to have just one
moon.

RECAP
LIFE
PROCESSES
LIVING OR NON-LIVING?
• Living things have life processes.
• They need food, water and air to stay alive.
• They can sense changes in the environment.
• They can move, grow and reproduce.

• Non-living things can be things that were once

living or part of a living thing, or they can be
things that have never been alive.
Life processes are the series of actions that are
essential to determine if an animal is alive.

growth
Movement All living things grow
All living things move, even plants reproduction
respiration Making more living things of the
same type
Getting energy from food
sensitivity excretion
Getting rid of waste
Detecting changes in the

Taking in and using food
MOVEMENT
LIFE PROCESSES

One of the easier ways to spot a

living thing, although in some types
of organisms it's easier to see than
in others.
Respiration is the process
RESPIRATION by which nutrients that an
organism has taken in are
converted to energy.
Sight Smell

SENSITIVITY
hearing taste All living things are able to detect and
respond to the conditions around them,
which is extremely important for
staying alive.

touch
GROWTH
All living things get bigger, taller and heavier over time, which is the easiest demonstration of growth in action.

vertebrate invertebrates Plants

Molluscs Worms
Mammals Birds Amphibians

Spiders Insects
Fish Reptiles
(8 legs) (6 legs)
All living things are able to
reproduce and make more of
REPRODUCTION their species, although they do
this in many different ways.

COMMON METHODS OF REPRODUCTION

FOR ANIMALS INCLUDE:
Giving birth
laying eggs
Assexual reproduction( e.g hydra
jellyfish sprout babies like buds
growing from their parent's body.)
Reproduction continuation..

COMMON METHODS OF REPRODUCTION

FOR PLANTS INCLUDE:
SEEDS
SPORES
ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION
(WHICH INCLUDES TUBERS,
RHIZOMES, AND RUNNERS)
EXCRETION
Living things must have a way to break
down and dispose of waste matter. The
process that removes waste products from
the body is called excretion.
NUTRITION
All living things require energy in order to
survive. The energy is derived from
nutrients, or food, which is then broken
down to release energy and chemicals that
the body then uses as building blocks to
keep everything working smoothly.

There are different Modes of Nutrition: These

are the Heterotrophic and Autotrophic.
HETEROTROPHIC
Heterotrophic is a kind of nutrition in which organisms do not
possess the ability to synthesize their own food.

Saprophytic or Saprotrophic
Parasitic
Food is obtained from organic
remains like dead organisms, Living organism flourishes by
excreta, fallen leaves, broken twigs, obtaining food from another living
food articles, etc. organism.

Nutrition
Heterotrophic continuation..

HOLOZOIC
Involves intake of solid pieces of food. Since solid food is taken
in, holozoic nutrition is also called ingestive nutrition. The food
may consist of another animal, plant or its parts.

Herbivore Carnivore Omnivore

Feed on plants or plant parts. Feed on other animals Feed on both plant and animal materials

Nutrition
AUTOTROPHIC
It is a kind of nutrition in which organisms can
synthesize their own food

The process by which green

plants make their own food with
the help of Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
and Water (H20) in the presence
of chlorophyll and sunlight is also
called photosynthesis.
Nutrition
HOMEOSTASIS
The ability of a living thing to recognise and maintain
its own internal conditions, such as temperature.
