What makes something
a living thing?
CHARACTERISTICS
OF LIFE
Learning Objectives

• Identify and describe the different characteristics of

life.

• Realize the importance of studying the characteristics

of life.

Organization of Life
All living things
are highly
organized.

All living things are

made up of one or
more cells, and cell is
the basic unit of life.
ribosome

mitochondrion nucleus

nucleolus
vacuole
Rough ER
cytoplasm
Smooth ER
chloroplast
Golgi body
peroxisome
Cell wall
It literally means
“steady state”.

Homeostasis is the
ability of living things to
maintain constant
internal conditions.

Energy Processing
All living things need, use
and process energy.

Green plants obtain energy

from sunlight by means of
photosynthesis, and humans
and animals derive energy
from the food.
Reproduction
All living things have the
ability to reproduce.

Sexual reproduction involves

two parents and the fusion of
gametes
Asexual reproduction involves
only one parent.

Heredity
Heredity means passing
on of genetic information
from one generation to
another.

All living things carry the

common genetic material
DNA.
Growth and Development

Growth simply means an

increase in size and mass
of an organism over time.
(Quantitative)

Development is maturing
over time.
(Qualitative)
Response to Stimuli
The reaction of an
organism to stimuli is
called tropism or
response.

The ability of an
organism to respond
appropriately against a
stimulus is called
sensitivity or irritability.
Adaptation and
Evolution
Adaptation - gradual or rapid change
in body structure/behavior to be
better suited and to survive a new
environment.

Evolution refers to the changes in

characteristics of a group of
organisms (population) over time.
How are these characteristics
being used in Science?
Biotechnology
It is the utilization of organisms, part
of organisms, or biological processes
for the benefit of mankind.
