Management and development of archeological museums in the

society of Knowledge and Information

( )
Cultural heritage is the legacy of physical artifacts and intangible attributes of a group
or society that are inherited from past generations, maintained in the present and
bestowed for the benefit of future generations. Cultural heritage includes monuments,
historic places, artifacts, e.t.c., that are considered worthy of preservation for the
future. The heritage that survives from the past is often unique and irreplaceable,
which places the responsibility of preservation on the current generation. Smaller
objects such as artworks and other cultural masterpieces are collected in museums.
In our country, Greece, the significance of cultural heritage is almost identified with
the monuments and the artifacts that have been remained from the famous ancient
Greek and Byzantine civilization, in which the new Greek nation supported its
national identity, totally indifferent from all other nations.
The contribution of the archaeological science and archaeologists in the elevation of
the cultural heritage is extremely important. The archaeological excavations create
most of the new archaeological sites which are considered worthy of restoration and
preservation, while the mobile artefacts are collected and exposed at the
archaeological museums.
The mission of these two cultural units is to the present the diachronic dimension of
culture from the ancient ages till today, to educate, especially the young people, and
also to entertain, in a cultural productive way, the public that they visit them during
their free time.
This mission has the possibility to be realistic only if there is a specific management
plan which is going to adjust the management rules and the marketing strategy into
the needs and the particular characteristics of the archaeological site and museum.
In the society of knowledge, the management plan for the archaeological museums
designed by the cultural manager and based on several different axes such as the
particular characteristics of this kind of museum, and the national cultural policy.
This plan contains the management of data collections, educational programmes and
of course the development of the communication between the archaeological

museum and the public which is going to connect the people with their cultural
heritage.
The management plan in the society of information based on the innovative
application of New Technologies, could provide digital documentation and
educational programmes with the use of multimedia and interactive activities. Also,
the modern mean of communication, the Internet, with the fast and simultaneous
distribution of the information could promote the cultural units, like archaeological
museum, all around the world easily and with the minimum cost.
