FOREWORD
This Indian Standard (Fourth Revision) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft
finalized by the Pesticides Sectional Committee had been approved by the Food and Agriculture Division
Council.
This standard was first published in 1957 and subsequently revised in 1964,1975 and 1982. A need was
felt to revise it again to make following additions/changes:
a)
To modify the title in crder to harmonize with the scope of the standard.
b)
Re-designation of the grades with only RW CD-efficient 10 align with the grades given in the
schedule 0 of Drugs and Cosmetic Rules, 1945.
c)
To make the provision for the six grades fr,r :;ihite fluids :.iisr,on the iines of ;idcic.
d)
e)
Inclusion of requirement
f)
In preparation of this standard, due consideration 3as been given 1o ;ne i;rovisions oi scnedule 0 of
Drugs and Cosmetic Rules, 1945. However, this stanclard is sunject ?n rhe rcstrictio;is imposed under these
wherever applicable.
For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement ut ~h1.sstandard is complied with? the :;inar
value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or an&%, shall be younded off in accordance
with IS 2 : 1960 Rules for rounding off numerical values (revr~eti !_ The 3umber of significant places
retained in the rounded off value should !X the same as that 4.ie r?tcxified 4ue n :his standard.

DETERMINATION OF RIDEAL WALKER (RW) COEFFICIENT
B-O GENERAL
B-l.3
It is a biological method for evaluating the germicidal property of disinfectant fluids. The dGinfectant fluids are diluted with distilled water and
tested against broth cultures of the prescribed organism. On the basis of response against this test
the Rideal Walker coefficients of the disinfectant
fluids are determined and the fluids are categorized
into grades (see 3.2).

B-5 CALCULATION
B-5.1 Obtain the Rideal Walker coefficient by
dividing that dilution of the disinfectant which
shows life in 2.5 and 5 minutes but no life thereafter,
by that dilution of pheno1~(1:95,1:100,1:105,1:110
or 1:llS) which shows life in 2.5 and 5 minutes, but
no life thereafter.

E-2.2 For ascertaining conformityof the material
to the requirements of the specification, samples
shall be selected from each lot separately.
E-l.3 To draw a representative sample, the contents of each container selected for sampling shall
be mixed as thoroughly as possible by suitable
means.
E-l.4 Precautions shall be taken to protect the

instrument and the container for samples from
adventitious
contamination.
The sampling instrument and the container for samples shall be

The quantity of material in the composite sample
shall be sufficient for triplicate determination of all
the requirements given in the specification.
