Tiong Bahru, the place where I live is a tired and old town.

Tiong Bahru is
one of the oldest housing estates in Singapore. It was the first project undertaken
by the Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT), a government body administered by
then British Colonial Authority, to provide for mass public housing in Singapore.
Tiong Bahru means new cemetery. Till the 1920s, it was an area dotted with
many cemeteries. They were as new as opposed to the established cemeteries in
Chinatown. The present day Tiong Bahru Rd was one time called Burial Ground
Rd. Tiong Bahru may seem like a boring place but it is still home to me.
With the help of advanced technology, Tiong Bahru has made drastic
changes. Tiong Bahru has many recreational facilities. There is one shopping
centre in the estate, Tiong Bahru Plaza and there is also the popular Tiong Bahru
Market. Tiong Bahru Market is known to being one of the best hawker centres in
Singapore. My grandparents own a store in the market for about a decade and
when I was little, I often help them out with their business during the weekends.
Whenever I visit the market, it is always lively and everyone were all friendly to
each other. Most of the stall owners are elderly people that are known as the
pioneer generation of Singapore. In fact, there were other children that were
brought to the market to help out with the family store because their
grandparents needed help with the customers. I remember playing with the
other children. My grandparents always say that we constantly make pleasing
noises like joyful infants and they were always grateful when we were there to
help them.
Being around the residents in Tiong Bahru feels like being around my
family because everyone is of a mixed race and they are all very friendly people.
Tiong Bahru Estate is densly populated with people of a different ages. There are
mostly elderly people found in the Estate and whenever I pass by the market,
shopping mall or void deck, I will hear the old people chattering and playing
mah-jong happily.
There are many flats around the estate because many people would like to
move into the area as it is convenient and peaceful. This causes the demands for
new flats to rise. It is very convenient for residents to travel because the mass
rapid transit (MRT) is located in Tiong Bahru Plaza and there are many bus stops
around. Tiong Bahru is also a few stops away from town so it is very convenient
for young people.
In conclusion, my neighbourhood is one of the best neighbourhood anyone
could ask for. Tiong Bahru might not have great sceneries but the people here
are very friendly and considerate.
