Frictional force is thought to be a useless force and many steps are taken in
order to avoid friction to get good results.
What is Friction?
If we define friction- it is an opposing force that exists between two sliding
surfaces. It is due to this friction that heat is generated between the two
sliding surfaces.
For example, we hear a lot about the engine oils. Many advertisements
portray that the engine oil shown is the best as it will increase the efficiency
of the engine. Friction generates heat in the engine and reduces its efficiency
as energy is required to overcome this force of friction. Therefore, lubricants
like engine oils are used to avoid friction.
We are able to walk only because of friction. You might have seen people
slipping when the surface is wet or when there is an oil spill on the surface or
when the surface is all ice. The reason behind slipping is that the force of
friction is reduced because of these factors and we are unable to maintain
balance.
Moreover, if this friction had not existed it would have been impossible to
hold things. You might have experienced that when you hold something
tightly for a bit longer sweat starts prevailing and you start losing the grip. It
is very difficult to maintain a strong grip on slippery things like wet soap
because there is less frictional force present. So just imagine, no friction no
possibility of holding things resulting in cricketers unable to hold bat or ball,
weightlifters unable to uplift weights- world would have been a totally
different place.
