Purpose
This unit standard is for people who work or intend to work in the Building and
Construction Industry.
People credited with this unit standard are able to:
Read and interpret drawings and prepare cutting list.
Prepare working area and select, use and maintain tools, equipment and
materials.
Set out stair dimensions and prepare templates.
Construct timber stairs
Construct timber ramps
Apply floor coverings.
Special notes
1. General Information
i. The stairs and ramps are for single flight stairs and are for domestic and
commercial use.
2. Range statements
i. Stairs include but are not limited to straight flight and spiral flight stairs.
3. Definitions
i. Spiral stair is a winding stair.

i. Performance of this unit standard must be done in accordance with the
following legislation and codes of practices:

drawing specifications.

(i) Floor coverings include buta re not limited to tongue and groove
boards, ply boards and block board. (ii) Tools used include but are
not limited to claw hammer, warington hammer, measuring tape
and nail puncher.
