BALANCE

Hind entrance of UST Hospital

Balance is the concept of visual equilibrium, and relates to our physical sense of
balance. Symmetrical balance is described as having an even distribution of "weight" on
equal sides of a centrally placed fulcrum. This image is an example of symmetrical
balance. When a line is drawn down the center, an axis is formed that divides the image
evenly into two parts. The two halves are mirror images of each other reflecting a
duplicate of the object that appears almost identical. For example is the statue of the
woman that appears to be raising her hand at the left has an exact mirror image of her
with the statue on the right. The same goes for the windows of this building.

PROPORTION

Colayco Shrine at Quadricentennial park

Proportion refers to the relative size and scale of the various elements in a
design. Artists use proportion to show emphasis, distance and use of space, and
balance. In this image taken at the Quadricentennial park, the Colayco shrine looks as if
it were smaller than the model and thus gives us an amazing illusion as if the model is
grasping it in his hand and eating it like an ice cream. This is because when this image
was taken, the model was closer to the camera so he appeared larger in size compared
to the statue that was farther away, because objects that are more distant appear
smaller.
