PREVENTION AND WELLNESS

Prevention
Prevention is one of the goals of Guidance and Counseling and the rationale
for many of the services and activities offered by the Guidance Program.
While prevention is found in the other Guidance Services, it is given more
attention today as a service because of the physical, emotional, interpersonal
and financial cost of dealing with a disorder.
Keeping something from happening or arising (such as a disorder).
Nature and Purpose
Prevention has three levels, depending who are not presently afflicted by the
disorder. Secondary prevention focuses on those who are experiencing the
early onset of the disorder. Tertiary prevention deals with individuals already
afflicted by the disorder and are being helped to manage it, reduce its
effects, and recover from it (Gibson and Mitchell, 1999)
To be effective a Preventive Program should:
1. Be implemented before the onset of the indicators or symptoms of the
disorder
2. Target population, not individuals
3. Consider the uniqueness of the population and their environments, and
should therefore involve the assessment of a wide range of forces
influencing the lives of the target population
4. Consist of procedures that have proven effective
5. Have strong organizational support even in the face of long-term goals

WELLNESS
Counselors should be involved in programs promoting lifestyles change for
healthy living.
Promoting lifestyle change for healthy living.
Nature and Purpose
Never before has there been much written about the relationship between
nutrition and physical health, between nutrition and behavior, and between
behavior and physical health. The emphasis on what one can do to bring
about healthy living underscores prevention as opposed to remediation.
Appropriate exercise, a good diet, and a stress-free lifestyle are considered
important in any Wellness Program. More recently people do say they
engage in fitness activities because they feel good, although initially, it was
weigh loss that motivated them. Working out has become a routine for many
because of the sense of well-being experienced as a result
