EFFECTS AND CONSEQUENCES OF CAREER AND HOMEROOM GUIDANCE
PROGRAM FOR GRADE 9 OF GORDON HEIGHTS NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

The current pandemic has had a major impact on the teaching and learning

environment in schools. Our students, without a doubt, will be affected in terms of their

developmental domains. The Department of Education has been sensitive to its Basic Education

Learning Continuity Plan, it is critical to focus on learners' life skills growth so that they can

address obstacles and adapt to the "new normal" brought on by the current crisis (Policy

Guidelines on the Implementation of the Homeroom Guidance (HG) during Crisis Situation, 2021)

Most teachers are becoming aware of the need to relate a topic to the students’ real-life

attitudes if the education process is to be completed for them. Though a subject like History or

Biology deals primarily with facts, these facts are intended to prepare a student to live a full,

rewarding and productive life. The goal of Career and Homeroom guidance is to affect the

lifestyle of every student rather than imparting knowledge; it must be psychological rather than

intellectual. Briefly are the principles involved in Homeroom Guidance:

1. Because a student develops a lifestyle through series of life experiences and through a

multitude of relationships over a period of time, he/she often has arrived at attitudes and

habits without being aware of them.

2. To bring the student to an awareness of his lifestyle, a situation must be created in which

he will react in his “typical” way.

3. Other persons greatly influence the kind of lifestyle we adopt. Also, we depend very

much on others to truly know and understand ourselves. For these reasons, any education

regarding lifestyle should be experienced in a group setting where free interaction takes

place. This interaction is an essential element in a person’s discovery and judgment of his

lifestyle.

3
EFFECTS AND CONSEQUENCES OF CAREER AND HOMEROOM GUIDANCE
PROGRAM FOR GRADE 9 OF GORDON HEIGHTS NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Homeroom Guidance is an educational subdivision of the school and a vital part of a

well-coordinated administrative pattern; while Career Development is a continuous, life-long

process of development experiences focused on seeking, obtaining and processing information

about self (values, interest, and abilities), about occupational – educational alternatives, about

life style and role options, about socioeconomic and labor market trends.

Homeroom Guidance is similar to Guidance Class, and is part of the Guidance and

Counseling Office's Information Services. This is based on applicable literature and experience

in other countries (Villar, 2007; Mendoza, 2003). Homeroom Guidance, according to Aquino

and Razon (1993), is "an integrated segment of the school's guidance services, provided to a

homeroom party, typically a section or a class with a teacher-adviser as facilitator." As a result,

the most commonly used terms are Guidance Class Curriculum and Guidance Class.

Homeroom Guidance is a flexible curriculum that gives students the skills they need to

deal with topics that aren't covered in the classroom but are critical to their success. As compared

to students who did not participate in the School Counseling Program, learners who received

Homeroom Guidance showed substantially less inappropriate conduct and more positive

attitudes toward school (Baker and Gerler, 2001).

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The purpose of this study is to determine the current status of the Gordon Heights

National High School Guidance Services, particularly, Career and Homeroom Guidance. The

objective of this study is to search for answers to:

1. What is the nature and scope of the Career and Homeroom Guidance in the high school?

4
EFFECTS AND CONSEQUENCES OF CAREER AND HOMEROOM GUIDANCE
PROGRAM FOR GRADE 9 OF GORDON HEIGHTS NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

2. Who has the responsibility of directing and coordinating the Career and Homeroom

Guidance, and what are their qualifications?

3. Is there agreement in attitudes toward Career and Homeroom Guidance between

administration, teachers, and counselors?

4. What recommendations and suggestions can be made which would enable the school

involved in the study to improve or extend their existing Career and Homeroom

Guidance Program?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

A homeroom is a session where students get relevant knowledge from the school from

time to time or every day. An interview with a teacher who offers emotional advice may also be

an internally. Homerooms often encourage pupils to engage and teach without getting an

academic lesson necessarily.

Students. As students meet the teacher in the homeroom, they are more likely to have

confidence in the teacher. If the student has an issue or concern, he opens his doctor. The

homeroom teacher will often be the only person the child trusts, especially if the teacher is seen

in the child's life to be a reasonable and valued person.

Parents. Know more about a student's home life and can help a child to face the

challenges and achievements of life. This background knowledge can also provide insight into

5

other teachers of the child, to help the child succeed in school with additional motivation or

patience.

Teachers. The homeroom teacher who regularly sees the students will provide emotional

support over the whole school year. This coherence and continuity is particularly beneficial to

students living in dysfunctional homes. Students look forward to attending a school when they

realize that their homeroom teacher will spend time with their peers and receive regular

guidance.

School Heads. In some colleges, homeroom teachers undergo clinical training, much as a

counselor assists students in emotional distress. Most institutions deal for hundreds of students

with a few advisors. Trained teachers in homerooms may have a more meaningful relationship

with students due to a lower teacher/pupil ratio than the consultant/pupil ratio.

Researchers. Advancement in leadership education and advocating social transformation

among students.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

This study focused on teachers implementing and teaching Homeroom Guidance in

Grade 9 of Gordon Heights National High School in the Division of Olongapo City. It covers the

respondents' age, sex, highest level of education, present position, specialized subjects taught and

service duration in teaching. Evaluation of responders regarding the implementation of the

Homeroom Guidelines prioritize the Curriculum, the Community Learning Service, and

participation or involvement. In addition, the teacher has issues when the Homeroom Guidance

is implemented. The predicted results of the report are the proposed action plan to enhance the

Division's homeroom guidance.

TYPE OF RESEARCH

In this study, the descriptive survey design was used. According to Dudovskiy (2016), the

aim of a descriptive study is to provide a more complete description without employing this

method for current problems or problems through data collection. Descriptive studies are

essentially used to describe several aspects of the phenomenon.

Three questionnaires were used to obtain answers to the major questions put to selected

teachers and advisors from the school. The questionnaires provided information to the

participants. The questionnaires were based on guidance and were defined as criteria for

evaluating the actual guidance practices used in the school.

RESPONDENTS

The respondents are from Grade 9 of Gordon Heights National High School in the

Division of Olongapo, teaching and implementing Homeroom Guidance in school year 2020-

2021.

PROGRAM FOR GRADE 9 OF GORDON HEIGHTS NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

SAMPLING METHOD

The respondents were selected through purposive sampling. Teachers who teach and

implement the Homeroom Guidance in Grade 9 in Olongapo's Division will serve as

respondents. According to Cressman (2019), purposive sampling is a non-probability sample

selected based on the study's population and objective characteristics.

PROPOSED INNOVATION/INTERVENTION/STRATEGY

In response to the questions concerning the basic objectives or goals of the school Career

and Homeroom Guidance Program, the following are proposed interventions and strategies:

1. Social adjustment, personal problems, academic guidance, and spiritual sensitivity;

2. Helping each student reach his full potential in all areas; academic, social,

psychological, vocational, and spiritual;

3. Provide an opportunity for every student to grow emotionally as he grows

intellectually;

4. Guidance program should assist each student in solving personal problems, plan

further schooling, and possible career information;

5. The counselor should provide information about colleges, scholarship programs, and

testing;

6. The counselor should also provide information about vocational and technical

schools. He should have job information available;

7. Help each student accumulate information so that he can make the best possible

choice in problems facing him;

8
