DEVELOPMENT OF RAIL TRANSPOT IN SABAH

1. WHEN DID IT START ?

( HISTORY )

A ride on the North Borneo Railway is truly a journey of rediscovery into the heart of
Borneo as it transports you back in time to the days of yore.
The 1880's had brought about a great change in Borneo. 2 The British administrators
who came to Borneo were adventure seekers, entering a country of unexplored forests
and untapped resources. This is were it all started, when the Director of the British
North Borneo Chartered Company think that building railways would pave the way
of cultivating commercial.

Worcestershire,England. He is a British railway
engineer with the assistant of Gounon (A Murut
peoples representative from Keningau). They were
the one who started the construction of the North
Borneo Railway in 1896.

3. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST ?

One of the cheapest means of transportation in Sabah is by train. The train stops at
several stations such as Tanjung Aru, Putatan, Kinarut, Papar, Kimanis, Bongawan,
Membakut Beaufort and Tenom. A 2-hour trip to Beaufort will cost you only RM4.80
(adult) and RM2.40 (children).
On top of that you can enjoy a nice view of the west coast of Sabah from inside the
train. The Beaufort Tenom stretch of track runs through the Padas River gorge and
is regarded as incredibly scenic.
Thus, making trains in Sabah as not just a mode of transportation but as one of the
tourism attractions as well.
