ItisnativetothetropicsoftheAmericas,perhapsfromsouthernMexico
andneighboringCentralAmerica.[5]ItwasfirstcultivatedinMexico
severalcenturiesbeforetheemergenceoftheMesoamericanclassical
civilizations.
Thepapayaisalarge,treelikeplant,withasinglestemgrowingfrom5
to10m(16to33ft)tall,withspirallyarrangedleavesconfinedtothe
topofthetrunk.Thelowertrunkisconspicuouslyscarredwhereleaves
andfruitwereborne.Theleavesarelarge,5070cm(2028in)in
diameter,deeplypalmatelylobed,withsevenlobes.Unusuallyforsuch
largeplants,thetreesaredioecious.Thetreeisusuallyunbranched,
unlesslopped.Theflowersaresimilarinshapetotheflowersofthe
Plumeria,butaremuchsmallerandwaxlike.Theyappearontheaxils
oftheleaves,maturingintolargefruit1545cm(5.917.7in)longand
1030cm(3.911.8in)indiameter.Thefruitisatypeofberry.[6]Itis
ripewhenitfeelssoft(assoftasaripeavocadoorabitsofter)andits
skinhasattainedanambertoorangehue.
