    ItisnativetothetropicsoftheAmericas,perhapsfromsouthern
    MexicoandneighboringCentralAmerica.[5]Itwasfirstcultivatedin
    MexicoseveralcenturiesbeforetheemergenceoftheMesoamerican
    classicalcivilizations.
    Thepapayaisalarge,treelikeplant,withasinglestemgrowing
    from5to10m(16to33ft)tall,withspirallyarrangedleaves
    confinedtothetopofthetrunk.Thelowertrunkisconspicuously
    scarredwhereleavesandfruitwereborne.Theleavesarelarge,50
    70cm(2028in)indiameter,deeplypalmatelylobed,withseven
    lobes.Unusuallyforsuchlargeplants,thetreesaredioecious.The
    treeisusuallyunbranched,unlesslopped.Theflowersaresimilarin
    shapetotheflowersofthePlumeria,butaremuchsmallerandwax
    like.Theyappearontheaxilsoftheleaves,maturingintolargefruit
    1545cm(5.917.7in)longand1030cm(3.911.8in)indiameter.
    Thefruitisatypeofberry.[6]Itisripewhenitfeelssoft(assoftasa
    ripeavocadoorabitsofter)anditsskinhasattainedanamberto
    orangehue.
