There are many reasons for why IT projects fail. In order to best manage IT projects it is
important to look at the causes of project failure. There are ten project management knowledge
areas. These ten knowledge areas segment different actions completed by the project manager
throughout the project.
In this report, I would like to discover Project scope management, Project communication &
Project costs management out of those ten area.
Project scope management: Scope refers to all the work involved in creating the products of the
project and the processes used to create them. Controlling and managing scope change is critical
to the success of any project, as scope changes can significantly impact the cost, schedule, risks
and quality of the entire effort.
Project scope management includes the processes involved in defining and controlling what is or
is not included in a project.

Scope planning: Deciding how the scope will be defined, verified, and controlled.
Scope definition: Reviewing the project charter and preliminary scope statement and
adding more information as requirements are developed and change requests are
approved.
Creating the WBS: Subdividing the major project deliverables into smaller, more
manageable components.
Scope verification: Formalizing acceptance of the project scope.
Scope control: Controlling changes to project scope.

Project communication: Most of the project conflicts are the result of miss-communications,
incorrect information sharing, use of inappropriate language, tones and delayed communication.
The communication approach defines your project team environment, project team working
culture and most importantly knowledge about the project itself.
Team members need the timely information and also want their concerns and issue addressed
timely. This can only happen with effective communications

All the stakeholder should get the right information from the right source in the right format at
the right time
Project communication management includes the processes required to ensure timely and
appropriate generation, collection, distribution, storage, retrieval and ultimate disposition of the
project information. Project Managers spend the majority of their time communication with team
members and other project stakeholders.

Project costs management: Project cost management is the processes involved in planning,
estimating, budgeting, and controlling costs so that the budget can be completed within the
approved budget. The project cost management process includes the following.

Estimate Costs
Determine Budget
Control Costs

Cost Estimating
developing an approximation of the costs of the resources needed to complete project activities.
Estimating schedule activity costs involves developing an approximation of the costs of the
resources needed to complete each schedule activity. In approximating costs, the estimator
considers the possible causes of variation of the cost estimates, including risks.
Cost Budgeting
Cost budgeting involves aggregating the estimated costs of individual schedule activities or work
packages to establish a total cost baseline for measuring project performance. The project scope
statement provides the summary budget. However, schedule activity or work package cost
estimates are prepared prior to the detailed budget requests and work authorization.
Cost Control
Influencing the factors that create changes to the cost baseline, Ensuring requested changes are
agreed upon , Managing the actual changes when and as they occur, Assuring that potential cost
overruns do not exceed the authorized funding, periodically and in total for the project,
Monitoring cost performance to detect and understand variances from the cost baseline,
Recording all appropriate changes accurately against the cost baseline, Preventing incorrect,
inappropriate, or unapproved changes from being included in the reported cost or resource usage,

Informing appropriate stakeholders of approved changes, Acting to bring expected cost overruns
within acceptable limits. Project cost control searches out the causes of positive and negative
variances and is part of Integrated Change Control.
