This month we will begin a unit consisting of mostly

nonfiction comprehension skills. Students will be learning
the vocabulary terms for nonfiction text features (caption,
heading, highlighted/boldface print, diagram, table of
contents, glossary, index, chart, and map) and how they help
us understand a text. Students will also work on identifying
the topic of a text, as well as, the main idea of a text and
individual paragraphs. We will continue to work on building
high frequency/sight words and the following phonics skills:
final consonant blends, double consonants, consonant
digraphs (sh, ch, th, wh), base words with endings -s, -ed,
-ing, and contractions.

Math
We will be focusing this month on addition and subtraction
strategies. By the end of 2nd grade students should know
basic addition and subtraction facts from memory. We will
focus on strategies such as counting on/back, partners of 10,
doubles, near doubles, and adding/subtracting with 9 and
10. We will also be learning about different kinds of addition
and subtraction story problems and strategies we can use to
solve the problems.

Projects
This month students will begin a new topic of study, air and
weather. Students will learn through nonfiction texts and
experiments about the different kinds of weather and
weather safety. They will also be introduced to taking notes
and then write an informational paragraph using their notes.
