Reading
I grew up in a small village in the 1950s and I hated
it! Even in those days, tourists used to come during
the summer. There was a railway station then, so it
didnt matter if you didnt have your own transport.
Every year, the visitors used to come and have tea
in the villages only caf or have picnics in the fields
and woods. I couldnt understand why they travelled
from those distant, exotic places in order to come to
our sleepy little community.
Our village, which was fascinating to the tourists,
seemed like a prison to me. I dreamed of living in a
city, where I could wear chic clothes and make-up.
There was no place for high heels or sunglasses in
our village. Fashion was totally unimportant.
I eventually fulfilled my dream and left to live in
London. Finally, 35 years later, I returned to the
village and was astonished by how much had
changed. All year round, tourists clog the narrow
streets, and the cars have to drive along the
pavements. I get a headache trying to shout above
the noise of the traffic, and the pollution is really
noticeable. Its just like being in the city!
