CHEMICAL ENGINEERING SERIES: HEAT TRANSFER

SOLVED PROBLEMS

A process fluid has to be cooled from 22 C to 2 C using brine in

a 2-4 shell and tube heat exchanger, as shown. The brine enters
at 3 C and leaves at 7 C. OHTC is 500 W/m2K. The design
heat load is 30 kW. The brine flows on the tube side and the
process fluid on the shell side. What is the heat transfer area of
the heat exchanger?

SOLUTION:

T lm=

( T 1t 2 )( T 2t 1 ) ( 227 ) ( 2[ 3 ] )
=
=9.1024 K
(227 )
( T 1t 2 )
ln
ln
( 2[ 3 ] )
( T 2t 1 )

For the MTD Correction factor

R=

T 1T 2 222
=
=2
t 2t 1 7 (3 )

S=

t 2t 1 7(3 )
=
=0.4
T 1t 1 22(3 )

From figure 11-4 (b) CHE HB 8th edition, for 2-4 shell and tube HE

FT =0.89
q=UA F T T lm

A=
