SURFACE ROUGHNESS MEASURMENT OF A FLAT SURFACE USING
SURFCOM
AIM:
To find the surface roughness of a given flat surface using Surfcom
APPARATUS REQUIRED:
Flat surface specimen
Fixture
Surfcom instrument
SPECIFICATIONS OF THE SURFCOM:
Stylus material: Diamond
Stylus diameter: 2
Stylus deflection (Z-axis): 400
Transverse movement of the probe (X-axis): 0-100mm
Column movement (C-axis): 300mm
PRE LAB QUESTIONS:
1. Define lay and why the measurement is made perpendicular to lay?
3. List the difference between cut off length and Sampling length
Measurement window
1. Title bar
2. Tool bar
3. Level meter
4. Measurement range
5. Counter

18. Zero reset
19. Auto stop
PROCEDURE:
1. Switch on the power, UPS, CPU and the controller in this order and open the
ACCTee software and measurement window screen appears as below in fig 1a.
2. Set the work piece on the fixture and put the stylus on surface(fig-1) by pressing
the joy stick down until level meter(3) is in centre or by clicking Auto stop(12)
icon
3. Double click measurement window (13) or Press F5 and set the standard
measurement conditions as below
Basic conditions:
Standard: ISO-97/09;Measure length: 5L;Measure speed: 0.300mm/s
Move speed: 0.300mm/s;Pre/post travel: cutoff/2*2
Filters:
Ls filter ratio: 300;Cutoff type : Gaussian;Cutoff (Lc)
: 0.8mm

7. Set vertical magnification(18) and horizontal magnification(19) to your
requirement
8. File
3. Whether increasing or decreasing the cut-off length affect the roughness value?
RESULT:
Thus the surface roughness value for a given flat surface was measured using
surfcom.
