Inthecontextofhydraulicdesign,hydrologicanalysisprovidesestimatesoffloodmagnitudesasaresultof
precipitation.Theseestimatesconsiderprocessesinawatershedthattransformprecipitationtorunoffandthat
transportwaterthroughthesystemtoaprojectslocation.
Thedesignofdrainagefacilitiesrequiresthedesignerto:
Selectthelevelofprotectiondesired,specifiedintermsofprobabilityofcapacityexceedance.
Findthecorrespondingflowrateand/orvolume,computinginmanycasesthecorrespondingwater
surfaceelevation.
Usethatasabasisfordesign.
Inthedesignoffacilitiessuchasstormdrainsystems,culverts,andbridges,floodsareusuallyconsideredin
termsofpeakrunoffordischargeincubicfeetpersecondorcubicmeterspersecond.Forsystemsthatare
designedtocontrolthevolumeofrunoff,suchasdetentionstoragefacilities,orwherefloodroutingthrough
culvertsisused,thedischargepertimewillbeofinterest.Thus,dependingontheneedsofaparticularproject,
thehydrologystudymayprovide:
Aflowrateforwhichtheprobabilityofexceedanceisspecified.
Avolumeofwaterexpectedwithaspecifiedstormduration,forwhichtheprobabilityofexceedance
isspecified.
Ahydrographflowrateasafunctionoftimeforaspecifiedprobabilityofexceedance.This
providesinformationaboutpeak,volume,andtimingofrunofflevelofprotectiondesired.
Theseresultsmaybeobtainedthroughstatisticalanalysisofhistoricalobservationsorthroughempiricalor
conceptualmodelsoftherelevantwatershedandchannelprocesses.
