1.0 INTRODUCTION
1

The Centre for Foundation Studies has been in existence for about
twenty-three years. Since then, it has undergone a lot of developments in
order to transform IIUM into a garden of knowledge. Its infrastructure has
been

upgraded

without

neglecting

the

advancement

of

academic

competitiveness in the ever-challenging IT-dominated educational sector.

Furthermore, one of the latest development was CFS IIUM Gambang (CFS
Gambang) which is another branch of CFS that place for medical, dentistry,
pharmacy, nursing and physical science students. In other words, it can be
said that most of the critical courses are offered in CFS Gambang which are
medical, dentistry and pharmacy courses.
Typically, we always hear that sciences students split the remaining time
among a range of activities: leisure and sports. Male and female college
students spent their leisure time differently. Most of them are willingly
spending their leisure time by watching movies.
Next, as we know CFS Gambang offered sciences programme only. The
problem here is do CFS Gambang sciences students watch movies frequently
during their free time? Do the students prove what others claim about the
science students where the sciences students time is filled up with books?
Hence, we decided to determine the mean time for watching movies
among students CFS IIUM Gambang. The objective of this project is to
encourage CFS IIUM Gambang students to spend their time properly in order
to achieve flying-coloured
Therefore, our problem statement is does CFS IIUM Gambang students
spend most of their time for watching movies? We make a hypothesis by
stating that the male students generally spend too much time on watching
movies. Thus, to prove our hypothesis, we investigated the habits of
watching movies of CFS IIUM Gambang students.

2.0 METHOD
In this study, we use the simple random sampling method by using
online survey forms where 175 samples managed to be obtainedrandomly
from CFS IIUM Gambang students. However, 144 survey forms are accepted
while others are rejected due to several reasons such as confusing and
playful answers. In the survey form, we asked the students about their
particulars which are gender and programme. The questions in the survey
are on the type of movies, the average time spent on watching movies since
January 2015, the average number of movies watched in a month and
students view on whether they can release their tension from watching
movies. Moreover, we also included the question on the students time for
reciting al-Quran and their current CGPA.
In

the

descriptive

statistics,

we

analyzed

the quantitative

and

qualitative data. The quantitative data are the average number of movies
watched by CFS IIUM Gambang students and total hours spent for watching
movies. The qualitative data are the ranking on whether watching movies
could help students to minimize their stress after their hectic weeks and
tests along the weeks and the types of movies they preferred most.
Next, for inferential statistics, we further analyzed the data from
descriptive statistics by using t-distribution since the standard deviation of
population is unknown. Firstly, we categorized the students by their gender,
resulting in 2 different samples. Later, we will compare the samples by using
95% confidence intervals.

qualitative and quantitative data.

3.1.1

QUALITATIVE DATA

For qualitative data we decided to choose 2 variables which are the

types of movies preferred the most by students and the ranking on whether
movies help students in minimizing their stresses. Sample of both variables
are further divided according to gender.
Each sample is demonstrated in form of graph of population proportion
involving percentages. For this part, there is no calculation of central
tendency and variation since the data is qualitative. Apart from that, we also
decided to select the CGPA (Cumulative Grade) of students as another
qualitative variable that is to be discussed.

3.1.2

QUANTITATIVE DATA

For quantitative data we used two variables which are the average
number of movies watched by students in a month and their total hours
spent on watching movies calculated since January 2015. Same as previous
calculation, the samples are divided according to gender. Since the data is
quantitative, the central tendency (mean, median and mode) and the
variation (variance and standard deviation) of the data are to be calculated
as well as the construction of graphs and box-and-whiskers plot which to
determine the skewness of the data. Apart from that, we decided to choose
the total hours spent by students to read Al-Quran per month as another
quantitative variable that is to be discussed.

3.2 INFERENTIAL STATISTICS

In inferential statistics, the involved calculation is the estimation of
population mean or proportion of CFS IIUM Gambang students from sample
mean based on different confidence intervals. We chose 95% confidence
interval and the value is standardized for all variables. This is to ensure that
the comparison could be done easier later.

4.0 DISCUSSION
The purpose of this study is to determine the pattern of amount of
watching movies among CFS IIUM Gambang students and to estimate the
mean population on how much they spent to watch movies. Also, we want to
prove that watching movies can release their stress.
For the descriptive statistic, we have two samples for quantitative data
which are male and female. We found that the mean number of total movies
15

watched per month by the male students is 3.47 and for female 2.71. This
indicates that there is no significant difference between both samples. Most
of the students either male or female do not exaggerate in watching movies
as been proven by the calculated mode which are 2.61 and 2.33 respectively.
Furthermore, the small standard deviation of both samples; which are
approximately 3 and 2 depicts that the variation of students has no
significant difference. From the box plot, we can see that both samples have
unsymmetrical distribution which is positively skewed and there are outliers
for both samples. The number included 10 movies for female and 10, 12 and
20 movies for male sample. Overall, we can see that CFS IIUM Gambang
students have practice a healthy lifestyle. Next, we further analyze the data
in the inferential statistics.
Secondly, we analyzed the total hours that was spent by students on
watching movies since January 2015 until June. It is revealed that the mean
for male students is 25.62 while female is 25.31 hours. It does not show
large different between them. Then, the mode is calculated and it shows
most male students spent more hours on watching movies compared to
female students. There is a significant difference between those two samples
on standard deviation where male is 6.49 and female is 20.99. The large
standard deviation of female data represents the large variation among
them. Moreover, the box plot is drawn to display the skewness of the data
sets. The range is illustrated by the distance between the opposite ends of
the whiskers. The range for female student is larger than male. However,
both of samples show unsymmetrical distribution which is positively skewed
(right skewed). No outliers for both samples are shown.
Next, we analyzed the inferential statistics to identify the mean
population of CFS IIUM Gambang students on watching movies. We choose
95% confidence interval as it has quite small margin error. In the analysis to
compare between male and female students, the mean populations
overlapped with each other which means that there is no significant
16

difference between male and female for the total hours of movies watched
since January and the total number of movies watched in a month. The
similar result also had been shown from the mean population of the total
number of movies watched for both samples where both are overlapped with
each other.
For qualitative data, we used bar graph to describe the sample data
since there were only two samples which are male and female. We have two
qualitative data; types of movies preferred by students according to gender
and ranking on whether watching movies can release stress among students.
Firstly, from the graph, it is revealed that students, male and female, most
likely to choose adventure movies rather than other genre of movies as the
percentage exceeds 40%. When we look at the least preferred type of
movies, there is different between male and female.

Male least preferred

mystery while female least preferred comedy. Our next qualitative data is on
ranking whether watching movies can release their tension or not. From the
bar graph, we can conclude that most students seemed to be agreed with
the statement that watching movies can reduce stress since the proportion
of those who choose rank 4 until 6 is higher than 50% compared to the lower
ranks.
Besides that, we also ask the students about their current CGPA and
we found that both male and female got flying coloured result which is above
3.00. Anyway, percentage of female students that got the excellent results is
higher than male which is 88.5%. This is also has been prove from the
estimation of mean proportion where 74.30% to 92.30% of male students
and 81.42% to 95.58% of female students exceeded CGPA of 3.00. We also
asked about how much they spent their time on reciting the Quran. We got
the surprising result where about nearly 100% of them recited more than 3
hours of al-Quran per day. We considered it as a huge amount especially for
sciences students as they always busy with other schedules.

17

5.0 CONCLUSION
The result of our studies conclude that watching movies is a common
ways to spend leisure time for all students of CFS IIUM Gambang students.
They spend their time on movies moderately which indicate high discipline
and balance time management between studying and entertainment. It is an
interesting to note that the science students are up-to-date to latest movies
because the survey showed that most students watch at least 2 movies per
month. The most favourite genre of movies for these science students is
adventure whereas the least favourite genre are comedy and mystery which
are below 15% for both male and female students. Watching movies is also
considered an effective way for most of the students to release stress
especially in male students. As Muslim students, the habit of reciting AlQuran is prevalence and astoundingly good among them especially in female
students. The high academic achievement for this population is well
expected because most of this population consist of critical courses such as
medic, dentistry and pharmacy. Overall, the efforts to compare between two
sample of male and female in the survey proved to be insignificant resulted
from small population which provide lower variation.
A few suggestions to improve our study to get more accurate result are
to improve the number of sample so that the range of estimated mean is
smaller. Besides, to prove the relationship between the hours spent for
watching movies and reciting Al-Quran with the students CGPA, we need to
learn the method of correlation between variables to get maximum analysis
of the limited questionnaire. Furthermore, the population scope needed to be
widen to all CFS IIUM students instead of just Gambang Campus to produce
more significant study. The survey also need to be conducted at proper time
to avoid biasness in answering the questionnaire. Lastly, the definition of the
movies should be widen to anime, drama, reality TV show, drama, and
Youtube Videos to get more significant and higher hours of time spent on
these media as it is known many students prefer in these other types of
medias compare to movies alone.
18

6.0 ISLAMIZATION
Islam encourage moderate entertainment which benefit us similar to
watching movies which somehow can fill our leisure time as well help to
reduce stress. However, the trend nowadays among teenagers who spend
excessive time to watch this media remind us the importance of time as
stressed in Al-Quran in Surah Al-Asr which Allah swear with the time
indicating that human are in loss except those who are the believers and
doing good deeds as well as preaching other to the do the right and patient.

It also noted that the characteristics of successful Muslim in world and

hereafter is to avoid all activities which are wasting time as stated in Surah
Al-Muminun verse 1-3.

Making recitation as regular habit is a good conduct to achieve serenity
and purify our heart in which we are exemplified by the CFS IIUM Gambang
students. In brief, good time management and practicing Islam in daily life is
key elements to be a successful students in the world and hereafter.
