CHAPTER THREE: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1 Introduction
This chapter provided details of research design and data collection techniques used. It also

described the data analysis approach that will be used in the study. This is against the

background of the research objective, to find out the impact of covid 19 on the Kenya film

Classification Board employees’ performance..

3.2 Research Design

A descriptive research design will be used to find out the impact of covid 19 on the Kenya

film Classification Board employees’ performance. A descriptive research design will be

appropriate since it involves a one-time interaction with groups of people and will be used to

describe characteristics of a population or phenomenon being studied.

A descriptive study will be appropriate since according to Mugenda and Mugenda (2003) it is

one which information is collected without changing the environment (nothing is

manipulated).

3.3 Population of the Study

The research will target Kenya Film Classification Board head office employees. According

to the Corporation’s human resource department, there are sixty eight (68) employees at

KFCB. This constituted the population.

3.4 Sample Design

The researcher adopts the 30% proposed by Mugenda and Mugenda (2003) of the KFCB

employees. According to them, a minimum sample of 30% is adequate for educational

research. Hence, a total of 20 employees will be used for the sample. The employees will be

randomly selected from the entire population.

3.4 Data Collection
The study will use primary data to meet its objectives. The main data collection instruments

to be used to collect data is a questionnaire containing open-ended and closed-ended

questions. The questions are structured in order to obtain information on the impact of covid

19 on the Kenya film Classification Board employees’ performance. The questionnaire will

consist of four sections. Section A consists of demographic information, sector B consists of

working from home, sector C consists covid emotional distress while section C consists of

new work-related technology and their effect on employee performance.

The questionnaire allows greater uniformity in the way questions are asked, ensuring greater

compatibility in the responses. The use of open and close-ended questions on the

questionnaire allows for uniformity of responses to questions; while unstructured questions

give the respondent freedom of response which helps the researcher to gauge the feelings of

the respondent; he/she can use his or her own words (Field, 2005). Secondary data will be

obtained through desk search techniques from published reports which include the journals,

periodicals and building construction publications.

3.5 Validity and Reliability

According to Robinson, Mandelco, Olsen, & Hart (2001) validity is the degree to which

result obtained from the analysis of the data actually represents the phenomenon under a

study. Validity Will be achieved by having objective questions being included in the

questionnaire and by pretesting the instrument to be used through Pilot study in order to

identify and change any ambiguous, awkward or offensive questions and technique as

emphasized by Cooper and Schnidler (2003). The validity of questionnaires as instruments of

data collection will be assessed using readability test as well as a field test. All these tests will

be carried out in order to examine the validity of questionnaires as instruments of collecting

data. For this purpose, the 2 KFCB employees will be used to pilot questionnaire whereby

they will be requested to independently fill in the questionnaire and suggest structure of
sentences where they fill it is not easily comprehensible. After modification of each sentence

as deemed fit by the piloting exercise, the researcher will print the research instrument and go

to the field.

Reliability on the other hand refers to a measure of the degree to which research instruments

yield consistent results (Mugenda & Mugenda, 2003). In this study, reliability will be

ensured by pre-testing the questionnaire with a selected sample of 2 respondents. The

researcher will restructure the questions to ensure that the questionnaires would provide

reliable data as evidenced by the consistency of understanding of the questions by the

respondents as well as the responses they would make. Since all the respondents targeted are

from a single organization, some consistency of the finding would be realized. To measure

the reliability of the data collection instruments an internal consistency technique using

Cronbach's alpha will be applied to the gathered data (Mugenda & Mugenda,2003).

Cronbach's alpha is a coefficient of reliability that gives an unbiased estimate of data

generalizability and an alpha coefficient of 0.70 or higher indicates that the gathered data is

reliable as it had a relatively high internal consistency and was generalized to reflect opinions

of all respondents in the target population.

3.6 Data Analysis

Once the data is collected, the researcher will check for its accuracy, consistency and

completeness. The use of closed-end and open-end questionnaires contributes towards

gathering of both quantitative and qualitative data. The first objective will be analyzed using

descriptive survey and the second objective through factor analysis.

Descriptive statistics method will be applied to analyze quantitative data where data is scored

by calculating the percentages, mean, standard deviation and Variance. This will be done

using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) computer software. SPSS will be

considered appropriate since it allows the researcher to follow clear set of quantitative data
analysis procedures that leads to increased data validity and reliability and demonstrates the

relationship between the research variables. Factor analysis will be used to explore the

common variance-covariance characteristics of the sets of covid 19 factors that affect

performance of the Kenya film Classification Board employees.

3.7 Ethical considerations

The researcher will ensure that the study upheld quality and seek the consent of the managers

and the respondents will politely invited to participate in the study. In addition, the

confidentiality and anonymity of the respondents will be observed and the participants will

not be forced but do it voluntarily. Furthermore, their responses will be used for purpose of

this study alone.
