The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is an international


humanitarian movement with approximately 97 million volunteers, members and
staff worldwide which was founded to protect human life and health, to ensure
respect for all human beings, and to prevent and alleviate human suffering.

Doctors Without Borders


Mdecins sans frontires (MSF) (pronounced [meds s f tj] ( listen)),
or Doctors Without Borders, is an international humanitarian-aid nongovernmental organization (NGO) and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, best known
for its projects in war-torn regions and developing countries facing endemic
diseases.

Green Peace
Greenpeace definition. An organization devoted to environmental activism,
founded in the United States and Canada in 1971. Greenpeace has employed
passive resistance in opposition to commercial whaling, the dumping of toxic
waste into the sea, and nuclear testing.

YWCA/YMCA
The World Young Women's Christian Association (World YWCA) is a global
movement working for the empowerment, leadership and rights of women, young
women and girls in more than 120 countries.

Citizens for Local Democracy (C4LD)


We understand the need to have working definitions of the key features of our agenda,
particularly as the Community of practice grows more diverse. We would like to open the
discussion to other members of our community and invite your input, beginning with a basic
definition of participatory democracy.

CAVEAT (Canadians Against Violence)


Canadians Against Violence Everywhere Advocating its Termination, or CAVEAT, was
founded by Priscilla de Villiers. She is the mother of Nina de Villiers, who was murdered
August 9, 1991. The man who committed the crime had a history of violent assaults and
was out on bail at the time. He was still legally in possession of the weapon used in his
latest assault.

Goodwill Industries
Goodwill Industries International Inc. is an American nonprofit 501(c)(3)
organization that provides job training, employment placement services, and

other community-based programs for people who have barriers preventing them
from otherwise obtaining a job.

Street Kids International


Targeted killing is a modern euphemism for the assassination (premeditated killing) of an
individual by a state organization or institution outside a judicial procedure or a battlefield.

National Association for the Advancement of Colored


People (NAACP)
Naacp. The NAACP, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored
People, is a civil rights organization founded in 1909 to fight prejudice, lynching, and
Jim Crow segregation, and to work for the betterment of "people of color." W. E.B.

Oxfam
Oxfam is an international group established in England in 1942 that provides
help to poor countries and disaster areas. An example of Oxfam is a group who
brings food to a starving nation.

International PEN
PEN International (known as International PEN until 2010) is a worldwide
association of writers, founded in London in 1921 to promote friendship and
intellectual co-operation among writers everywhere. The association has
autonomous International PENcenters in over 100 countries.
