Casing in a wellbore serve 7 important functions:

to prevent cave-in or washout of the hole

to prevent contamination of freshwater horizons

by fluids from lower zones

to exclude water from the producing formation

to confine production to the wellbore

to provide a means of controlling well pressure

to permit installation of artificial lift equipment for

producing the well

to provide a flow path for produced fluids

Conductor Casing:

Channel to raise mud to pits

Prevent erosion of hole around base of the rig

Sometimes attachment of BOP

Partly used to support some wellhead loads

Mostly driven into the ground with a pile driver

Set before well site construction

Surface Casing:
F

Provide attachment for BOP`s

Protect freshwater resrevoirs

Starting point for casing head and other fittings

Protect borehole from losses, washouts, cave-in

Support all other casing and tubing loads

Intermediate Casing:
F

Protect borehole from losses, cave-in etc.

Seal weak zones

Protect borehole from high pressure zones

Stabilize borehole for drilling deeper

(reduce open hole section)

Production Casing:

Isolate production reservoir from undesirable

fluid penetration

Isolate production reservoir from other zones

penetrated

Protective housing for tubing string

Should be the best pipe put in the well

Liner String:

Abbreviated string of casing used to case open

hole below existing casing

Overlapping with previous string 30 150 m

Intermediate and/or production liners possible

May be tied back from liner top to surface to

make continuous casing string to wellhead

by OD, weight per foot, grade of steel,
wall thickness, type of threads.
