Reading/Language Arts
Genre of Study: Fiction - Students will be introduced to the elements and structures of
nonfiction texts. We will continue to use strategies and provide evidence from the text
to support our understanding. Remember to read 20 minutes each night and record
the title of the book, pages read and minutes read in your childs AVID agenda.
The 4 Rs:
Unit of Study: Dividing Whole Numbers and Decimals - Students will model, use mental
math, and estimate to divide whole numbers and decimals.

Unit of Study: Force, Motion, and Energy - Students will learn the uses of energy
(mechanical, light, thermal, electric, and sound), demonstrate that the flow of electricity
in circuits requires a complete path through which an electric current can pass, demonstrate how light changes the appearance of an object through refraction and reflection.
Social Studies
Unit of Study: Conflict and Compromise: America as an Independent Nation - Students
will learn what events and turning points caused America to become an independent
nation such as the French and Indian War, Boston Massacre, The Boston Tea Party, and
the U.S. Constitution.
