According to these critics, this immersion in technology needs to be put into perspective. Students’ usage of media rather reflects the desire of students to communicate with friends, to search for meaning, to create their own place in 30 society, and of course 10 relax and have fun not so much towards learning. V__ Furthermore, it cannot be dismissed that the influence of students’ experience in utlizing video games in this approach is apparent. Experience is important as it has a direct impact on students’ preference for video games. It also influences ease of use, learning opportunities and usefulness. Another disadvantage of 35 using games as part of the curriculum is the chance of over-use. When students and teachers begin to rely too heavily on the use of video games to lear or review material, they risk losing the skills that allow them to function outside of a digital source VI.” Though game-based learning is an educational trend that is gaining popularity, 40 experts caution that video game acceptance cannot be taken for granted. In this regard, there is a need for studying students’ acceptance of video games for learning. Students play an important role in the whole educational system, but they are often overlooked in the e-learning adoption process. This is a serious shortcoming because understanding students’ perspectives could help 45 instructors to integrate technology in the classroom and at the same time improve and enhance the learning process. It is also used to produce many household products. In particular, it is used in pressed-wood products, such as particleboard, plywood fibreboard, glues, adhesives, permanent-press fabrics, paper product coatings, and certain insulation materials. Other than that, formaldehyde is commonly 5 used as an industrial fungicide, germicide, and disinfectant, and as a preservative in mortuaries and medical laboratories. Formaldehyde also occurs naturally in the environment. It is produced in small amounts by most living organisms as part of their normal metabolic processes. II During the 1970s, urea-formaldehyde foam insulation (UFFI) was used in many 10 homes. However, few homes are now insulated with UFFI. Pressed-wood products containing formaldehyde resins are often a significant source of formaldehyde in homes. Other potential indoor sources of formaldehyde include cigarette smoke and the use of unvented fuel-burning appliances such as gas stoves, wood-burning stoves, and kerosene heaters, 16 IIL The levels of formaldehyde exposure of individals may vary. Industrial workers who produce formaldehyde or formaldehyde-containing products, laboratory technicians, certain health care professionals, and mortuary employees may be exposed to higher levels of formaldehyde than the general public. Exposure occurs primarily by inhaling formaldehyde gas or vapour from the air. A very 20 small amount may enter through the skin when workers come into contact with liquids containing formaldehyde, When formaldehyde is present in the air at levels exceeding 0.1 ppm, some individuals may experience adverse effects such as watery eyes, burning sensations in the eyes, nose, and throat as well as coughing, wheezing, nausea, and skin irritation. 25 (© Hak Cipta Universiti Teknologl MARA CONFIDENTIAL CONFIDENTIAL 7 LGIAPR 2014/ELCSOO/TEST 1 IV. Although the short-term health effects of formaldehyde exposure are well known, less is known about its potential long-term health effects. In 1980, laboratory studies showed that exposure to formaldehyde could cause nasal cancer in rats. This finding raised the question of whether formaldehyde exposure could also cause ‘cancer in humans. In 1987, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 30 (EPA) classified formaldehyde as a probable humen carcinogen under conditions of unusually high or prolonged exposure. Since then, some studies have associated formaldehyde exposure with certain types of cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies formaldehyde as fa human carcinogen, In 2041, the National Toxicology Program, an interagency 35 programme of the Deparment of Health and Human Services, named formaldehyde as a known human carcinogen in its 12" Report on Carcinogens. V__ There are various ways people can limit formaldehyde exposure in their homes. ‘The EPA recommends the use of “exterior-grade” pressed-wood products to limit formaldehyde exposure in the home because these products emit less 40 formaldehyde since they contain phenol resins and not urea resins. Examples of pressed-wood products include plywood, paneling, particleboard, and fiberboard and these are not the same as pressure-treated wood products, which contain chemical preservatives and are intended for outdoor use. Buyers can also be more savvy when making purchases. For instance, before purchasing pressed- 45 ‘wood products, including building materials, cabinetry, and furniture, they should enquire about the content of formaldehyde in these products. Formaldehyde levels in homes can also be reduced by ensuring adequate ventilation. ‘Adapted from www.cancer.gov (© Hak Cipta Universit Teknologi MARA CONFIDENTIAL, CONFIDENTIAL, 8 LGIAPR 2014/ELCSOO/TEST 1 QUESTION 1 ‘What do the following words mean as used in the passage? a) commonly (line 5) b) significant (line 12) °) vary (line 16) d) adverse (line 23) e) potential (line 27) (5 marks) QUESTION 2 State TWO (2) main ways workers can be exposed to excessive levels of formaldehyde, a) b) (2 marks) QUESTION 3 Explain what the following sentence means. “This finding raised the question of whether formaldehyde exposure could also cause cancer in humans" (lines 29-30).
