ECS208 BASIC SOLID MECHANICS

Learning Outcome

Able to compute the normal and shearing stress.

Able to solve the composite material problem using stress and strain concept
Able to calculate the deformation caused by normal and shearing stresses

1. A hollow circular steel pipe is subjected to a tensile force of 120 kN as shown in figure below.
The pipe has an outer diameter of 150mm and 1.0 m long. Determine the thickness, of the
hollow steel pipe if the maximum allowable normal tensile stress is 10.6 MPa. Es=200 kN/mm2.

thickness = 30mm
2. Determine the force required to punch the hole as in the figure below. The shear strength and
the thickness of the metal plate are given.

Diameter of circular slug : 40mm

Plate thickness : 15mm
Shear strength : 110kPa

P = 0.207 kN

3. The circular step bar has a diameter of 35 mm between A and B, 60 mm between B and C and 45
mm between C and D. It is acted upon by the axial forces shown in the figure below. Determine
the net elongation of the steel bar. E = 200 kN/mm2.

= 1.91 x 10-6 m

4. A rigid horizontal bar CD of weight 45 kN

is supported by 2 circular rods as shown
in below figure such that the bar remain
horizontal. Diameter of rod A is 10mm
and rod B is 12 mm. Given EA=205
kN/mm2 and EB=100 kN/mm2.
Determine:
i. The normal stresses at rods A and B.
ii. The change in length of rods A and B.
i) A = 285.98 MPa , B = 199.29MPa
ii) A = B = 1.4 mm
5. A rigid plate is fixed to the top of the
composite member consisting of a
copper core and an outer bronze
cylindrical shell as shown in the figure
below. The cylinder is fixed at the
bottom support and an axial tensile
force, P = 200 kN is applied to the
cylinder. Take the modulus of elasticity
of copper EC = 120 kN/mm2 and bronze
EB=105 kN/mm2.
i) Determine the axial stresses in the
copper and the bronze.
ii) Calculate the displacement of the
plate.
i) C = 4.43 MPa , B = 3.87 MPa
ii) = 5.54 x 10-5 m

6. Determine the values of the stress in portions AC and CB of the steel bar shown when the
temperature of the bar is -45C knowing that a close fit exists at both of the rigid supports when
the temperature is 24C. Use the values E = 200 GPa and = 11.7 x 10-6/C for steel.

AC = 214.1 MPa , CB = 108.5 MPa

7. A 500mm long, 16mm diameter rod made of a homogenous, isotropic material is observed to
increase in length by 300 m, and to decrease in diameter by 2.4 m when subjected to an axial
12 kN load. Determine the modulus of elasticity and Poissons ratio of the material.

E = 99.5 GPa , = 0.25
