Questions- Simple Stress-Strain and Thermal Stresses

Q1. A member LMNP is subjected to point loads as shown in Fig. 1. Calculate: (i) Force P necessary for
equilibrium. (ii) Total Elongation of the bar. Take E= 210 GN/m2.

Q2. A straight uniform bar AD is clamped at both ends and loaded as shown in fig.2 .Initially the bar is
stress free. Determine the stresses in all the 3 parts (AB, BC, CD) of the bar if the cross-sectional area of
the bar is 1000 mm2.

Q3. A 700mm length of Al alloy bar is suspended from the ceiling so as to provide a clearance of 0.3 mm
between it and a 250mm length of steel bar as shown in fig. 3. Aal = 1250 mm2, Eal = 70 GN/m2, Asteel =
2500 mm2, Esteel = 210 GN/m2. Determine the stress in the al and steel due to a 300kN load applied 500
mm from the ceiling.

Q4. A concrete column of cross sectional area 400mm x 400mm is reinforced by 4 longitudinal 50 mm
dia. round bars placed at each corner. If the column carries a compressive load 300kN, determine: (i)
Loads carried, (ii) The compressive stress produced in the concrete and steel bars. Esteel = 15 Econcrete.

Q5. Fig 4 shows a round steel rod supported in a recess and surrounded by co-axial brass tube. The upper
end of the rod is 0.1 mm below that of the tube and an axial load is applied to a rigid plate resting on the
top of the tube.
(i) Determine the magnitude of the maximum permissible load if the compressive stress in the rod
is not to exceed 110 MN/m2 and that in the tube is not to exceed 80 MN/m2.
(ii) Find the amount by which the tube will be shortened by the load if the compressive stress in
the tube is the same as that in the rod.
Take Es = 200 GN/m2; Eb = 100 GN/m2;

Q6. A steel bolt and sleeve assembly is fig. 5. The nut is tightened up on the tube through the rigid end
blocks until the tensile force in the bolt is 40kN. If an external load 30kN is then applied to the end blocks,
tending to pull them apart, estimate the resulting force in the bolt and sleeve.

Q7. A steel rod 15 m long is at a temperature of 15°C. Find the free expansion of the length when the
temperature is raised to 65°C. Find the temperature stress produced when:
(1) The expansion of the rod is prevented
(2) The rod is a permitted to expand by 6 mm.
Take α=12×10-6 per°C & E=200 GN/m2

Q.8 A composite bar made up of al and steel is held between 2 supports as shown in fig. 6. The bars are
stress free a temp. of 40°C. What will be the stresses in the 2 bars when the temp. is 20°C if (i) The
supports are non yielding, and (ii) The supports come nearer to each other by 0.1 mm. It can be assumed
that the change of temperature is uniform all along the length of the bar.
Es=210 GN/m2 Eal=74 GN/m2

Q.9 A flat bar of aluminum alloy 25 mm wide and 5 mm thick is placed between two Steel bars each 25
mm wide and 10 mm thick to form a composite bar 25 mm × 25 mm as shown in in figure 7.The three
bars are fastened together at their ends when the temperature is 15° C. find the stress in each of the material
when the temperature of the whole assembly is raised to 55° C. if at the new temperature a compressive
load of 30 kN is applied to the composite bar what are the final stresses in the steel and alloy ?
Given Es=200 GN/m2 Eal=200/3 GN/m2 αs=1.2×10-5 per®C αal=2.3×10-5 per®C
