OBJECT: To prepare a M/20 solution of Ferrous Ammonium sulphate and with the help of this solution to determine the

strength and molarity of the given solution of KMnO 4.

Calculation for Amount of FAS required for the preparation of M/20 Ferrous Ammonium sulphate solution
(Mohrs Salt solution) in 250 ml of water.
M = WB 1000
MB V
[Where WB = Weight of FAS required, MB = Molecular weight of FAS]

On Plain side

1 = WB 1000
20 392 250
WB = 4.90 gm
THEORY:

MOLECULAR EQUATION:
2 KMnO4 + 3H2SO4 --------------------- K2SO4 + 2 MnSO4 + 3H2O + 5[O]
[ 2FeSO4.(NH4)2SO4.6H2O + H2SO4 + [O] --- Fe2(SO4)3 + 2(NH4)2SO4 + 13 H2O ] 5
2KMnO4 + 8H2SO4 + 10 FeSO4.(NH4)2SO4.6H2O K2SO4 + 2MnSO4 + 5Fe2(SO4)3 +10(NH4)2SO4+68 H2O.
IONIC EQUATION:
MnO4 + 8H+ + 5e ------------- Mn+2 + 4H2O
[Fe +2---------- Fe+3 + e] 5
MnO4 + 8H+ + 5 Fe +2 -------- 5 Fe+3 + Mn+2 + 4H2O
IN BURETE: KMnO4.
IN PIPETE: Ferrous ammonium sulphate
INDICATOR: KMnO4 acts as self indicator.
END POINT: Colourless to permanent pink colour.
OBSERVATION:
Weight of empty watch glass = 25.452 gm
Weight of empty watch glass + salt = 30.352 gm
Weight of Mohrs salt = 4.90 gm
Molarity of Mohrs salt = M/20.
Volume of Mohrs salt solution taken for each titration = 10 ml.

CALCULATIONS:
(i)
Molarity of the KMnO4 solution can be calculated as follows:
From the balanced chemical equation, it can be said that 1 mole of KMnO 4 reacts with 5 moles of FAS.
MKMnO4 VKMnO4 = 1
M FAS V FAS
5
MKMnO4 10.2 = 1
1/20 10.0
5
MKMnO4 = 0.0098 mole/lit.

On Plain side

(ii)

Strength of KMnO4 solution = 158 x 0.0098 = 1.5484 gm/lit.

RESULT: The molarity of the given KMnO4 solution is 0.0098 mole / lit and strength of given KMnO4 solution is
1.5484 gm / lit.
PRECAUTIONS:
(i) Mohars salt crystals should be transferred from watch glass to the beaker very carefully, not a single crystal should left
sticked.
(ii) 2 to 3 ml of dilcon. H2SO4 should be added at the time of dissolving Ferrous Ammonium sulphate, which will make
the solution transparent and even prevent the hydrolysis of Ferrous Ammonium sulphate.
(iii) During making up of the volume, last drop of the water should be added very carefully.
