ESTIMATION OF KMnO4 using MOHR SALT (FAS) solution (M/10)

AIM:[R1] To prepare a Mohr Salt (Ferrous Ammonium Sulphate-FAS) Solution M/10

concentration and estimate the strength of KMnO 4 using Mohr salt solution.
APPARATUS REQUIRED: [R2]
 Burette
 Conical flask
 Funnel
 Pipette.
 Standard Mohr salt solution.
 KMnO4 solution.
PRINCIPLE: [R3] KMnO4 solution acts an Oxidising agent in acid medium and reacts with
FAS solution which acts as reducing agent.
PROCEDURE: [R4]
1) The Mohr’s salt solution of required concentration is prepared by weighing the salt
accurately and making the solution up to 250 mL in standard flask.
2) The burette is rinsed and filled with KMnO 4 solution 20 mL of ferrous ammonium
sulphate solution is pipette out into a conical flask.
3) One test tube of Dilute 2N H2SO4 is added (approximately 20mL).
4) The initial reading of the burette is noted and the content in the conical flask is titrated
against KMnO4until the appearance of pale permanent pink colour.
5) Final reading of the burette is recorded.
6) The difference gives the value of KMnO 4 to oxidise ferrous ions present in 20 mL of
Mohr salt.
7) The titration is repeated and the concordant value is recorded.
SHORT PROCEDURE:[L1]
Burette solution : KMnO4 solution
Pipette solution : Standard Mohr’s salt (FAS) Solution
Conical flask : 20 mL of FAS +20 mL of 2N H 2SO4
Temperature : Room temperature
Indicator : Self Indicator
End Point : Appearance of pale permanent pink colour.
REACTIONS: [L2] MnO4- +8H+ +5Fe2+  Mn2+ +5Fe3+ +4H2O
Oxidation: [Fe2+ Fe3++e-] x 5
Reduction: MnO4- +8H+ +5e- Mn2++4H2O
OBSERVATIONS AND CALCULATIONS: [L3]
Preparation of Standard solution of Mohr salt:
Calculation of weight to be weighed to prepare 250 mL M/10 solution of Mohr salt
THEORETICAL VALUE: [L4] [MM of FAS- FeSO4. (NH4)2SO4.6H2O=392 g/mol]
Wt/Lt = Molecular mass x Molarity = 392 g/mol × 0.1 mol/L (M/10 = 0.1 M) = 39.2 g/L
Wt for 250 mL = 39.2/4 = 9.8 g
MOLARITY OF FAS:[L5] Wt/Lt/GMm = 39.2 g/L /392 g/mol = 0.1 M
PREPARATION OF STANDARD FAS:[L6]
