Prepare M/40 solution of oxalic acid. With its help, determine the molarity and strength of
the given solution of potassium permanganate (KMnO4).
Aim:
To prepare M/40 solution of oxalic acid. With its help, determine the molarity and
strength of the given solution of potassium permanganate (KMnO4).

Procedure:
(Ruled page)
1. Weight 0.7875g of oxalic acid crystals and dissolve them in water to prepare 250ml of
M/40 oxalic acid solution using a 250ml measuring flask. Rinse the pipette with the
M/40 oxalic acid solution and pipette out 20ml of it a washed titration flask.
2. Rinse and fill the burette with the given KMnO4 solution.
3. Add one test tube (20ml) full of dilute sulphuric acid (2M) to the solution in titration
flask.
4. Note the initial reading of the burette.
5. Heat the flask to 60-700C and KMnO4 solution from the burette till a permanent light
pink colour is imparted to the solution in the titration flask on addition of least single
drop of KMnO4 solution.
6. Note the final reading of the burette.
Repeat the above steps 4-5 times to get a set of two concordant readings
Observation:
Weight of watch glass = 16.334g
Weight of watch glass + Oxalic acid = 16.334g +0.7875g = 17.1215g
Weight of Oxalic acid = 0.7875g
Volume of Oxalic acid solution prepared = 250ml
Molarity of Oxalic acid solution = M/40
