EXPERIMENT 7(Ruled page)

Prepare 0.05M solution of Ferrous ammonium sulphate (Mohr’s salt). Using this solution
find out the molarity and strength of the given KMnO4 solution.

Aim:
To Prepare 0.05M solution of ferrous ammonium sulphate (Mohr’s salt). Using this
solution find out the molarity and strength of the given KMnO4 solution.

Chemical Equations: ( Blank page)

2KMnO4 + 3H2SO4 K2SO4 + 2MnSO4 + 3H2O + 5[O]

[2FeSO4 (NH4)2.6H2O + H2SO4 + [O] Fe2(SO4)3 + 2(NH4)2SO4 + 13H2O] x 5

2KMnO4 + 8H2SO4 + 10FeSO4 (NH4)2.6H2O K2SO4 + 2MnSO4 + 5Fe2(SO4)3 +

+ 10(NH4)2SO4 + 68H2O

Ionic equations:

MnO4- + 8H+ + 5e- Mn2+ +

4H2O [Fe2+ Fe + e-] x 5
3+

MnO4- + 8H++ 5Fe2+ 5Fe3++ Mn2+ + 4H2O

Procedure:
(Ruled page)

1. Prepare 250ml of 0.05M of Mohr’s salt solutions by dissolving 4.9g of Mohr’s salt in
water as described in experiment. Rinse the pipette with the 0.05M Mohr’s salt
solution and pipette out 20.0ml of it in a washed titration flask
2. Rinse and fill the burette with the given KMnO4 solution.
3. Add one test tube (20ml) full of dilute sulphuric acid (4N) to the solution in titration
flask.
4. Note the initial reading of the burette.
5. Now add KMnO4 solution from the burette till a permanent light pink colour is
imparted to the solution in the titration flask on addition of least single drop of
KMnO4 solution.
6. Note the final reading of the burette.
7. Repeat the above steps 4-5 times to get a set of two concordant readings

Observation:
Weight of watch glass = 16.734 g
Weight of watch glass + Mohr’s salt = 16.734g +4.9g = 21.634 g
Weight of Mohr’s salt = 4.9g
Volume of Mohr’s salt solution prepared = 250ml
Molarity of Mohr’s salt solution = 0.05M

a)
Molarity of the KMnO4 solution.
From the overall balanced chemical equation, it is clear that 2 moles of KMnO4 react
with 10 moles of Mohr’s salt

b) Strength of the KMnO4 solution

Strength (in g/L) = Molarity x Molar mass = 0.009 M x 158 = 1.422 g/L
Result: (Ruled page)

Molarity of the KMnO4 solution =0.009 M

Strength of the KMnO4 solution =1.422 g/L
