Prepare a standard solution of M/40 ferrous ammonium sulphate (Mohr’s salt) in 250 ml. Using
this solution, determine the molarity and strength of the given potassium permanganate (KMnO 4)
solution.
V) Chemical equation :
-
Reduction half reaction: ( MnO4 + 8H+ + 5e- --- Mn2+ + 4H2O ) x 1
2+
Oxidation half reaction: ( Fe --- Fe3+ + e ) x 5
-
Overall reaction: MnO4 + 8H+ + 5Fe2+--- Mn2+ + 4H2O + 5Fe3+
VI) Calculation of weight of Ferrous ammonium Sulphate for the preparation of standard
solution of 250 ml of M/40 (Mohr’s salt solution)
1 250
Weight of Mohr’s salt = × 392 × = 2.5 g
40 1000
VII) Calculation of actual Molarity of the Mohr’s salt solution:
Weight of Mohr's salt 1000
Molarity = ×
Molar Mass of Mohr's salt 250
2.5 1000
Molarity = × 0.025 M
392 250
