AIM: (a) To prepare 250mL of M/20 Ferrous Ammonium Sulphate (Mohr’s salt) solution.

(b) To determine the molarity and strength of the supplied KMnO4 solution by titrating it against the above solution.

(a) PREPARATION OF 250mL OF M/20 FERROUS AMMONIUM SULPHATE SOLUTION:

THEORY:

Molar mass of FeSO4.(NH4)2SO4.6H2O (Mohr’s salt) = 392 g mol-1.

Amount of Mohr’s salt (W) needed to prepare 250mL of M/20 Mohr’s salt solution is calculated as :

Molarity x Molar Mass of Mohr’s salt x Volume of solution

W=
1000

= 1/20 x 392 x 250/1000

= 4.9g

Mohr’s salt thus weighed is transferred to a 250 mL Volumetric Flask and dissolved in a minimum volume of distilled
water. A few drops of concentrated sulphuric acid is added to the solution to check hydrolysis of ferrous sulphate.
The volume of the solution is then made up by adding distilled water until the lower level of the meniscus touches the
etched mark on the volumetric flask.

(b)DETERMINATION OF MOLARITY AND STRENGTH OF THE SUPPLIED KMnO4 SOLUTION.

This is a redox titration in which KMnO 4 acts as a strong oxidizing agent in acidic medium and Mohr’s salt solution acts
as a reducing agent represented by the following reaction:

IONIC EQUATIONS INVOLVED:

Reduction Half: MnO4- + 8H+ + 5e- → Mn2+ + 4H2O

Oxidation Half: [ Fe2+ → Fe3+ + e-] X 5

_____________________________________________________

Overall Equation: MnO4- + 8H+ + 5Fe2+ → Mn2+ + 5Fe3+ + 4H2O

INDICATOR- : KMnO4 is a self indicator

END POINT : Persistent light pink colour.

M/20 ferrous ammonium sulphate solution is taken in a titration flask and dilute sulphuric acid is added to it. The
solution is then titrated with KMnO4 solution taken in a burette.

OBSERVATION :

Volume of M/20 Mohr’s salt solution pipetted for each titration = 10mL.

Volume of dilute H2SO4 solution added into the flask = 10mL.

CALCULATIONS:

(i) Molarity of KMnO4 solution:

From the overall ionic equation it is clear that 1 mole of MnO4− ion reacts with 5 moles of Fe2+ ion.

(ii) Strength of KMnO4 solution:

Strength = Molarity (M1) x Molar Mass of KMnO4

= ……………….mol/ L x 158g/mol

= ………………..g/L

RESULT:

1. The Molarity of supplied KMnO4solution = ………….M

2. The strength of supplied KMnO4 solution= …………….g/L

PRECAUTION:

(i) As KMnO4 is deeply coloured upper meniscus should be read while taking the burette reading.
(ii) Air gap if any should be removed from the solution.
