Experiment no.1:

Determine the strength of ferrous sulphate solution by titrating it against

0.02M KMnO4.

1.1 Principle:
It is redox titration.

1.2 Standard solution:

0.2M KMnO4.

1.3 Indicator:
KMnO4 itself.

1.4 End point:

Colorless to light pink color.

1.5 Balance equation:

2KMnO4 + 10FeSO4. 7H2O + 8H2SO4 → K2SO4 + 2MnSO4 + 5 Fe2 (SO4)3 + 78H2O

1.6 Procedure:
Take KMnO4 solution in burette and 10 cm3 of ferrous sulphate solution in the titration flask.
Add half test tube of dil. H 2SO4 in flask. Note the initial reading of burette. Add KMnO 4
dropwise to titrate the ferrous sulphate solution with constant stirring. Slow down the titration as
the pink color begins to persist. When it is close to the end point, add KMnO 4 drop by drop. Note
the final reading. Repeat the experiment to get three readings.

1.9 Result:
27.8g of FeSO4. 7H2O are dissolved per dm3 in solution.
