Construction Planning Basics

This document provides an introduction to construction planning. It defines construction planning as understanding what needs to be built and establishing the right methods, equipment, workforce, and resources to complete the work safely, to the required quality standards, and in the most economical way to meet client requirements. The two fundamental activities of any construction process are handling materials and equipment, and positioning them through skilled labor to produce the finished product. Objectives of construction planning include identifying resource needs, coordinating resources, setting progress targets, and addressing issues to establish realistic schedules and cost estimates. Key aspects of planning involve defining requirements, identifying work activities and methods, measuring work quantities, collecting resource output data, determining unit costs, and selecting appropriate construction process models.

Definition
The planning of construction methods may be
defined as
the understanding what has to be built, then establishing
the right method, the right plant and the right labour force
to carry out the works, safely and to the quality required,
in the most ecomonical way to meet the client
requirements

The construction process

In any form of construction, the are only two

fundamental activities:
1. the handling of material and equipment
2. by the skill of the work force, the positioning of
the materials and equipment (assembly) to
produce the desired completed whole.

Objectives of construction planning

Identification of resource requirements
Coordination of resources
Setting intermediate control targets
there are many supplementary objectives, such as
identification and solution of construction problems,
establishment of realistic completion date,
estimation of cost
cost, etc
