Opening (warmer activity + teacher introduction/demonstration of small group activities)
Speaking , listening and reading:
Task 1:
1. Turn on the rhyming song( engage and explore)
I will turn on the song twice because it is new lesson for students. Also, by turning on the
song two times, students will become familiar with the words that has the short a sound.
In addition, I will sing the song and use TPR to introduce the words.
After the song:
I will ask students to recall the words that "have short a sound" from the song.
2. Tell students story and integrate the words that have short a sound.
While telling students the story I will engage them by asking them questions, repeating the rhyme
and acting with me. As a result, students will pay attention and motivate to learn.
Reasons for choosing story:
Integrate various learning styles which help students to understand the lesson easily. For example,
visual by showing them pictures. Also, auditory when students will listen to the teacher while
telling them the story and finally kinesthetic, when students will act and use body language.
Arouse students interest as a result, they will gain various vocabulary words and understand
better.
3. Highlight the word that have short a sound together and ask them to say and read (engage, explain)

Small

4.

Show them the flashcard and ask them "what is this?" Model the answer and repeat the short a
sound.

Guided Experience (group working with the teacher)

Independent Experience (small group activity 1)
The teacher will explain the activity and students will get chances to engage and explore.
Matching cards. (low level)
Materials:
Cards of the short a sound and other sounds.
Words that includes the short a sound such as, apple, cat, hat, grandma, lap, hands, map, lap and nap.
Instructions:
Give each pair a set of the sounds cards and the words cards.
Ask student to put the sound cards down in a pile and the matching words cards are spread face
down on the table.
Student will take top the sound cards from the pile and turns over one of the words cards. Then they
will read the word and sound.
If the cards match, student will keep the pairs .For example, they will match apple with the a sound
Whereas, if the card dont match, they will returned the sound cards to the bottom of the pile and
the words card is turned back face down in its place. This will help them to remember where the
word cards were.
While students doing the activity, I will correct their mistakes if they have and assess their learning.
Reasons for choosing this activity:
Motivate them to learn because it has bright and colorful illustrations generate interest.
Help them to distinguish between the short a sound and other sounds.
Why I choose this for low level?
Low level students faced problem in distinguishing between the sounds. So, this activity will support them
because they will have one word in each card.
How it will help both students and teacher?
Students:
Motivate them to learn because it combines fun and learning.
Capacity to distinguish between the actions.
Identify the words and try to use them in their life.
Teacher:
Assess her students
Notice her students mistakes and improve their learning.

Independent Experience (small group activity 2)

Show me the words. (Medium Level) .This activity will be for two groups.
Materials:
Cards for the words
Cards for short a sound and other sounds.

Whole
Time: 5 min

Instructions:
It will be paired activity, one student will say the short a sounds for her partner.
Her partner will choose a word that has short a sounds and say it
They will continue working until finishing all the cards.

Why I choose this activity:

Improve students listening because each partner has to concentrate while their partner say
the sounds and the words.
According to Vygotsky, who mentioned that when students work together and have a chance
to discus and share this will support them to acquire language and learn from each other. In
addition, this is "ZPD", because students can guide their partner while doing the tasks.
Why I choose this for medium level?
Medium level students have the ability to distinguish between the sounds .B they need more practice and
support to be able to reach the high level. In addition, by doing as pairs, they will scaffold and help each
other.
Independent Experience(small group activity 3)
X and O .( high level)
Materials:
student has a paper for X and O game and cubes
Instructions:
It will be paired activity, each partner has a turn to select a picture and say it. For example, Amal will
choose a picture of apple, say sound of the short "a" and say the word. Then she will put a cube on
this picture. Then her partner will choose a picture, say sound of the short "a "and say the word.
If they get horizontal, vertical and diagonal line, they will win.
Why I choose this activity for high level?
High level students need challenged activity and this activity integrates math and English.
Moreover, they are able to read words without facing any problem.
Closing
Make a short review by asking students to say the short a sound and give examples of words that has
this sound.
Give them a piece of paper to write examples of words that has the short "a" sound.

Assessment
While students doing the activity I will walk around to observe their pronunciations of the words .In addition I will ask
them oral question, such as, what is this . Moreover, I will provide appropriate feedbacks for them and improve their
learning.
Reflection:

What went well:

I used various techniques to help students to identify the vocabulary words such as song and story by using
puppet. After hearing the song twice, I asked them about the vocabulary words, so, it supports their learning.
Students love the story because it was new strategy to apply it. They were engaged and act with me.
I prepared various activities that support students in listening and speaking skills.
I reinforce students who sat silently and listened. Students responded to that by being quite.

Even better if:

Reduce the opening activity and give students the activity quickly because some students felt bored and I lose
their interest.
Make sure that all students are doing the activity correctly by walking around and molding for them.
Keep praising the quite students.
Give the resources quickly because students were waiting more time to get the resources.
Next step in teaching and learning:
Reward the students regularly.
Use different techniques to support students learning such as, songs and story.
Walk around and monitor the students while doing the activity.
