great activity for a family. The whole family can participate in this activity, even
the small ones.
It may surprise you that there are many treasures that a beachcomber
can look for. Some are common while others are rare and unusual. Agates are
some of the rare treasures to be found on the beach. These rocks are much
sought-after by beachcombers. The most precious are the hollow ones where
crystals have formed on the insides. Some other varieties of agates are striped
or marbled.
If you are lucky, you can even find shark or mammoth teeth fossils.
Sediment can be dislodged from the seabed by strong waves, which then carry
the fossils to the shore. Fossilized shells, ammonites, vertebrates, dinosaur
bones and teeth, and even tree bark have washed up on beaches as well.
Beach glass is bits of broken glass that have been scoured by the waves,
sand and the wind. As a result, they have smooth, unusual shapes which many
find beautiful. Also called sea glass, it is abundant. Some beachcombers make
them into jewellery. Fish owners like to use them as a beautiful addition to the
pebbles in their aquariums.
Do not forget about the beautiful seashells. Different beaches can
produce different types of shells. Other than that, you can find weathered
driftwood which you can add to your terrarium or used as decoration at home.
The next time you go to the beach, take a little time to comb the beach. You
might find your very own treasure.
