Leisure Activity Verbs
In this comprehensive teaching activity, students learn about the verbs go, play and do and
how to use them to talk about sports and free time activities.
Before class, make one copy of the worksheet for each student.
Procedure
Give each student a copy of the worksheet.
Tell the students to complete the questions in the first column by adding the appropriate
verb: go, play or do.
When everyone has finished, check the answers together as a class.
Ask the students to look at the verbs used in the questions. Elicit what the sports and free
time activities have in common when each verb is used. Then, ask the students to complete
the rules at the bottom of the worksheet about when to use go, play and do.
Answer Key
Go is used with activities and sports that end in -ing.
Play is used with team sports and those sports that need a ball or similar object. It is also
used for activities in which two people or teams compete against each other.
Do is used with recreational activities and with individual, non-team sports or sports in which
a ball is not used.
Next, divide the students into pairs. Tell the students to work together and to write follow-up
questions using the verb from the previous question.
Examples:
Do you go swimming?

Who do you go swimming with?

Do you do exercise?

What exercise do you do?

When the students have finished, ask the students to pair up with a different partner.
Students then ask their new partner the questions on their worksheet.
When a partner answers yes to a question, the student puts a tick () and asks his or her
follow-up question.
If a partner answers no, the student puts an X and moves onto the next question.
When they have finished interviewing each other, ask the students to return to their first
partner and tell them what they learned about the student they interviewed.
