DEFINITION

Parentral Nutrition (PN) is feeding a person intravenously by passing the usual


process of eating and digestion. The person receive nutrition at formula that contain
nutrients such as glucose, amino acids, lipids & added Vitamins & dietary
minerals. It is called Total Parentral Nutrition or total nutrient admixture (TNA).
When no significant nutrition is obtained by other routes. It may be called
Parentral Nutrition called (PPN)
When admixtured through vein access in a limb, rather than through a central vein.

Cernral venous access devices- long term VADs as Kickman, Brovise or groshuny
catheter or perephirally inserted central catheter (PICC line) or peripheral IV access.

Volume control infusor.


Filters- 0.22 micron for TPN (without post emulsion).
3.2 micron filters for TNA or fat emulsion.
