TestOverview
TheDynamicConePenetrationTestprovidesameasureofamaterialsinsituresistancetopenetration.Thetestisperformed
bydrivingametalconeintothegroundbyrepeatedstrikingitwitha17.6lb(8Kg)weightdroppedfromadistanceof2.26feet
(575mm).Thepenetrationoftheconeismeasuredaftereachblowandisrecordedtoprovideacontinuousmeasureof
shearingresistanceupto5feetbelowthegroundsurface.TestresultscanbecorrelatedtoCaliforniaBearingRatios,insitu
density,resilientmodulus,andbearingcapacity.

Cost
ThecostofpurchasingormanufacturingaDCPtestapparatusisrelativelylow.Currently,pricesvaryfrom$1,600to$2,200
USDforportablehandoperatedequipment.Moreexpensive,automatedDCPrigscanbepurchasedthataretowable.
DependingontheDCPapparatusthetestcanbeconductedefficientlywithaslittleas1to2people.Again,dependentupon
thetestapparatus,depthoftesting,andtheconditionofthesubgrade,thetestrequires5to10minutestocomplete.

ProcedureandTestApparatus
TheDCPapparatusconsistsofa5/8inchdiametersteelrodwitha60degreeconicaltip.Therodistoppedwithananvilthat
isconnectedtoasecondsteelrod.Thisrodisusedasaguidetoallowan8kghammertoberepeatedlyraisedanddropped
fromaheightof575mm.Theconnectionbetweenthetworodsconsistsofanviltoallowforquickconnectionsbetweenthe
rodsandforefficientenergytransferfromthefallingweighttothepenetratingrod.

OncethetestapparatusisassembledtheDCPisplacedatthetestlocationandtheinitialpenetrationoftherodisrecordedto
provideazeroingscale.Whileholdingtherodvertically,theweightisraisedtothetopoftherod575mmabovetheanviland
dropped.Thepenetrationoftherodismeasuredaftereachdrop.Incohesivesoilsthepenetrationrodmayberotatedslightly
topreventbindingofthesoilandtherodinfluencingtestresults.Thetestshallbeterminatedifthedesireddepthisreachedor
iftherodpenetrateslessthan1/8inchin10drops.
