International Life

International Student Newsletter | December MMXVI

It's the most wonderful time of the year

It's the hap-happiest season of all
With those holiday greetings and gay happy meetings
When friends come to call
There'll be parties for hosting
Marshmallows for toasting
And caroling out in the snow..
Is it too daring to mention the concept of Entzauberung
of Max Weber to explain the role of the religion in our
Society for passing from a world of magic to rationalism? Yeah....may be too heavy.
This period in the Western Society is very much connected with spending time with friends and family,
sharing mince pies and drinking sherry, celebrating at a
table enjoying a special Xmas dinner, exchanging gifts.
Because it is very close to the start of the new year it is
also a time for good wishes and new year resolutions.
Join fellow students and enjoy some music, games,
quizzes, food and soft drinks, and good company.

DO YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO VOTE IN UK ELECTIONS?
Unless you are a British Citizen then the answer is probably
NO.
However this year the Norwich City Council are emailing all
young people not already registered to vote to check their
details and they have not filtered out International Students.
If you have received an email you should reply to the
elections@norwich.gov.uk, saying that you are an International Student and that you are not eligible to vote.
You will then be removed from the list.
All Students with
chronic conditions and
mobility issues welcome

Gain real world experience while at University

Enactus UEA is a student-lead
society working with university
advisors, business advisors and
the local community to solve
problems through entrepreneurial action to build a better more
sustainable world. At Enactus,
you can gain first-hand experience in helping to tackle social problems happening around us.
This year, most of the projects are based on helping people in addressing their needs and integrate them back into the society.
There are several projects students can get involved with:

Help set up a homeless shelter to allow rough sleepers in Norwich keep warm and safe over Winter. You will have the opportunity to engage with rough sleepers and learn more about their
stories and help them get their lives back on track.

Get the chance to start a community-based caf with a pay-as

-you-feel concept to help those suffering from food poverty to
get a hot meal and possibly create job opportunities for them to
live independently.

Use your creative and innovative skills to upcycle old furniture

and clothes into pet beds, clothes and toys. This project is
aimed at helping homeless animals get proper medical care and
shelter using the profits we make from the sale of the pet essentials.

Develop your entrepreneurial skills through our commercial

project which uses waste coffee grounds to make an environmentally-friendly body scrub that acts as an alternative for students on a budget. You will also be raising awareness about
eliminating the use of microbeads in skincare products through
our commercial project.

Put your business knowledge forward through a consultancy

project. Enactus helps local businesses and organisations who
are at risk of being shut down by providing advice and suggestions on how they can further develop their businesses.
When you invest your time in Enactus, you will be investing in
endless opportunities to tackle social problems, engage with
corporate sponsors and better the world we live in.

it's been fantastic to mentor my Buddies this semester. I've found it

really rewarding to watch their confidence in English improve, as well
as their accuracy. The introduction to the Conversation Club last
night was particularly enjoyable and useful for them as they could
practise English in a comfortable and informal setting. I look forward
to future mentees.

I want to express my sincere thanks to my language buddy. Before I
met her, I did not expect too much how professional this English Language Buddy Scheme would be. I am so lucky that she was
matched to me in this plan, she takes this scheme seriously, she is
organized and has high sense of responsibility, different interactive
methods were used in every meeting. In the first week, she prepared
a presentation about herself to close the distance between we two.
Culture exchange, common phrases, grammar practice, news sharing etc. in the following weeks.
