What materials should I be reading outside of the classroom?
Ms. Farnsley: scientific journals; scholarly articles; theses and dissertations from other
schools; professors works.
Dr. Gaudin: find out who is doing what kinds of research in different graduate programs;
papers and articles; find out where the people who wrote these works are, where they
went to school, and where they went to do research.

What types of things should I be doing to help me learn more about my major?
Ms. Farnsley: talk with professors, professionals, and other people in your major and
concentration.
Dr. Gaudin: look into the Gulf Shores Marine Lab for summer course credit and research
experience; talk to people and faculty; look at the boards in the hallways of Holt; get
graduate school training; get research experience.

What opportunities or experiences should I be seeking out?


Ms. Farnsley: get research experience; try to get papers, articles or projects published.
Dr. Gaudin: find internships and research programs to get involved with.

What are some ways that I can be a stronger graduate school applicant?
Ms. Farnsley: research to see what different schools value; get good letters of
recommendation; get involved with research opportunities; get works and projects
published.
Dr. Gaudin: find mentors; get involved with internships; get research experience; show
that you are self-motivated; do well on GRE and subject exams; apply for scholarships;
join different science clubs and societies at UTC; talk to professors.

Are there any areas that I should be focusing on?


Ms. Farnsley: get a feel for different things in your concentration; read a lot of journals;
keep your interests broad, then focus more on things you find that you enjoy.
Dr. Gaudin: find out what you want to be studying in graduate school; find mentors; have
a narrow focus.

Is there anything specifically related to becoming a marine biologist that I should be


doing?
Ms. Farnsley: find internships; talk to people at the aquarium; talk with professors and
other people.
Dr. Gaudin: find internships; talk with a lot of people; get research experience; read a lot.

Do you have any general advise about life or my major?


Ms. Farnsley: do not be afraid to try new things.
Dr. Gaudin: do not expect to be rich or famous; a lot of effort is required to become a
scientist; be self-motivated; have good time organization.
