Alicia Hoxie is the Nevada state winner of the Be

the Whale art competition. Be The Whale
project is a nationwide scholarship program
focused on raising awareness of endangered
species. Several years ago an artist named Jan
Jagoe began organizing the project that blends
art and endangered species and focuses on a
different state and a different endangered
species within that state each year. 2016 is
Nevada's year and the endangered species being
focused on is the Mt. Charleston blue butterfly.
This butterfly, which lives only in the Mt.
Charleston area, is threatened by wildfire and
fuel reduction fires in areas of its habitat. Alicia's
image shows the butterfly, attracted to the
flame, held by a human hand to show the
responsibility humans have in the fire that
threatens its habitat. Alicia won $1000.00 for
her piece.
Other contest entries are displayed in the N Hall
display case.
