Proven Reliability

A two-stage axial turbine increases engine life.

The 131-9[A] provides a cost-effective APU
solution for Airbus A318, A319, A320 or A321
aircraft. A 10 percent power advantage compared
to the APS3200 APU results in a two minute faster
cabin cool down and heat up. The 131-9[A] also
meets mandated noise requirements without
added insulation which can lead to foreign object
damage (FOD).

With more than 50 years of APU development

and application experience, Honeywell is a leader
in driving APU solutions. We have extensively
tested and refined the 131-9[A] design to ensure
highly reliable starting operation and performance.
Our innovations and ongoing product development
have expanded the 131-9[A] in-service operation
to the following levels:

cooling, reducing vane temperatures as much

as 750 F. This turbine technology, combined
with high-temperature CoCrAIY coatings; proven
in propulsion engines, greatly enhances stator
and hot section life.

APU MTBUR >8,500 hours

Greater Longevity
The 131-9[A] utilizes a high-blade-count impeller
and turbine design assuring strength, low noise,
high durability and long service life. The first- and
second-stage turbine discs are fabricated using

Value-Added Operation
With a cooler operating hot section, the 131-9[A]
is able to provide quicker main engine starts.
This helps decrease wear and tear on the main
engine, improving reliability and lowering overall
maintenance requirements. The 131-9[A] also
features a de-rate option to reduce fuel burn and
emissions. By reducing the fuel rate by 5 percent,
this software modification can create an estimated
fuel savings of up to $5,000 per aircraft, per year
for lower costs of operation and ownership.
Additional features include the hydro pad load
compressor seal, which ensures cabin air
quality and eliminates delayed or canceled
flights due to contaminated cabin air, and our
Bent Tab 2 blade retention modification improves
APU performance and reliability by eliminating
low-time blade walking incidents.

Reduced Noise
As Honeywells quietest commercial APU, the
131-9[A] meets the ICAO minus 5 dB requirements
to improve aircraft acoustics. Using our patented,
perforated inlet housing to create a more uniform
airflow while simultaneously reducing distortion-

induced inlet noise, the units inherent acoustic

advantages are provided by the two stage
axial turbine and the high-blade-count engine
compressor impeller and turbines generate
bladepassing frequencies well above the audible
range. Additionally, the load compressor was also
designed for quietness, with its axial inlet guide
vanes providing added noise shielding.

Streamlined Maintenance
As the most commonly used APU for single-aisle
commercial transport aircraft, the 131-9[A] series
APU features an optimized design to simplify
maintenance operations. Requiring only nine
common hand tools to perform routine
maintenance, mechanics are able to quickly
remove and replace key LRUs in just a few
minutes. With easily accessible LRUs and the use
of quick-release flex-line plumbing and electrical
connections, captive fasteners, J-hook designed
flanges, and the elimination of lockwire, the units
unique design helps minimize maintenance
requirements and aircraft downtime. Additionally,
the 131-9[A] is the only available APU to provide
an Electronic Control Box (ECB) that integrates
advanced plain-English trouble shooting logic
and health-monitoring capabilities.
