Course Description: Concert Band is an audition based performing


ensemble. The ensemble is open to both music and non-music majors at
Akron University. This combination allows music majors the opportunity to
refine their professional skills while providing others an opportunity to
continue at a high level. Emphasis will be placed on the study and
performance of traditional and contemporary band literature.

Prerequisites:
Prior experience playing a band instrument and reading music.

Learning Outcomes:
Students will continually work on the following skills during rehearsals and
performance.
-Study and perform a variety of band literature.
-Improve musicianship individually and in an ensemble.
-Become aware of various ensemble and rehearsal techniques.
-Apply their knowledge of history, theory, and pedagogy in an applied
activity.

Required texts:

- There are no required texts for this major conducted ensemble. Music
will be passed out throughout the semester. It is each individuals
responsibility to keep track of the parts passed out to them. If you lose
an original part, you are responsible for purchasing another copy of it.

Course Requirements:
- Students must attend all concerts on time.
- Students must be at all rehearsals on time with required materials.
- Students must demonstrate a positive attitude at all times.

Attendance Requirements:
Rehearsal and concert attendance is required at all times. Your attendance
and participation is key in grading. The student is ultimately responsible for
communication any absences and conflicts in a timely manner.
Absences from rehearsals in general will be unexcused with the exception of
the following:
- Death or birth in the immediate family will be excused. Immediate
family is defined by the university as a spouse, parent, sibling or child.
- Severe illness in which a student is unable to attend rehearsal. You
must have a doctors note excusing you from class. Please schedule
any doctors appointments around rehearsals.
- A sanctioned UA trip or event (e.g. marching band, game, field trip,
etc.) will be excused if a student presents proper written
documentation from an instructor in a timely manner, prior to the
absence. Not the day of the absence.

Assessment:
Grades will be based upon attendance, preparation, public performances,
and attitude.

Grading Policy:
Your attendance is required at all rehearsals, dress rehearsal, and
performances. Your attendance and class preparation are the primary
criteria used to determine your grade in this course. Each individual is a

crucial part to the ensemble. Any absences from the class automatically
affect your grade. If you miss a performance the highest grade you can
receive is a C. Each rehearsal you miss will result in 10 % off of your final
average.

Your final grade will be based on the following material:

Performance Dress:
Men:
-Black Tuxedo/suit: no tails
-White tux shirt/white dress shirt with collar
-Black bow tie
-Black shoes with tall black sox
Women:
-Black Dress Pants. No Yoga pants.
-Black Short Sleeve Blouse
-Black Shoes
-If you have a black choir dress, that will work to.

University Policy: "Students whose names who do not appear on the

class list will not be permitted to participate (take exams or receive credit)
without first showing proof of registration by no later than Sept. 12

Withdrawal Policy: The last day to add or drop a class is Sept. 12th and
the last day to withdraw (WD) from a class is Oct. 17th.

Plagiarism: Under University Rule 3359-41-02, plagiarism constitutes a

type of student misconduct that is punishable by formal disciplinary


probation, suspension, or dismissal from the University. It is the responsibility
of all University of Akron students to know what plagiarism is and how to
avoid it.
