the same as one more than three times the number

The difference between the product of six and a number and negative
two times the number

Convert from Algebra to English

3n = 5 ( n + 3 ) - 3

5 ( 3n + 4 ) 4

2 ( 5n 1 ) + 14n

Real World Example

You had $10,000 to invest. You put x dollars in a safe, governmentinsured certificate of deposit paying 5% per year. You invested the
remainder of the money in noninsured corporate bonds paying 12%
per year.
o Construct an Algebraic expression which describes your total
interest gained at the end of the year.

o Use your algebraic expression to determine your end of year

total interest if you invested $6,000 in the safe, governmentinsured certificate of deposit.

Geometry Application

A piece of wire 120 cm in length is to be cut into two pieces, one to

form a rectangle and the other an equilateral triangle. The length of
the rectangle is to be three less than twice the width, and each side of
the triangle is to be twice the length of the rectangle.

o Find the length of each piece of wire

Hint: The Perimeter of a Rectangle is ( P = 2l + 2w ) and

the Perimeter of an Equilateral Triangle is ( P = 3s )
